I was in my pet store this morning, and saw this poor budgie there.
This poor little one is in rough shape,

> red and puffy underneath both eyes
>his cere is crusted somewhat
>missing feathers around his eye from scratching
>tail is pumping a bit
>nostrils seem clogged

I brought him home and this is what I have done:

gave Ivermectin
1 dose of Baytril and will continue for a 10 day course of treatment
put him in the sunshine outside
gave him seed with kelp, prime vitamins.
fresh water.
I will mist him later and give him a good cleaning

I am quarantining him in my Sarahs' room until he is good, probably months from now!
he's eating and drinking his poop seems ok, from what the store told me but I don't believe them.(he hasn't gone yet to determine what his poop is like)
he's been this way for two months, they gave him Tetracycline, it seemed to help somewhat, but he's still sick.

I have plenty of meds here, so I'm just going to treat him with Baytril for now and see if he improves.
I will start feeding him veggies and see if he eat them.

How in the he&^ can they just leave him like that:mad::mad::mad:

any suggestions would be very helpful!! thanks everyone.

btw, we named him/her "Puffs" he's a cute little guy

 :11: Bless your heart, Beth! That poor baby! I'm shocked they didn't seek medical attention for him.

Could he possibly have mites? I just googled mites on budgies (images). Have a look if you have a moment. :(

I'm positive he has mites. the store said he was being picked on in the cage by the other budgies, so they separated him, then his eyes started to swell.
I know other birds will pick on other birds that are not well.
I looked up crusty cere on google, and like I said before I think it's mites.
he could also have a sinus infection, which would be causing him to scratch under or around his eyes.

I'v had experience with all types of mites, this is why I carry Ivermectin here, but also to protect my other birds from getting air sac mites which gouldian finches and canaries are known to get.

Mayden I wish I could take him to the vets, Num Num's surgery and last two check ups put us in the poor house. my husbands car broke down, and needed a new alternator, plus a rental for two days.
He's also due to go in for surgery at the end of this month and will be off for at least a week, and recovery will be slow, so at this point I am not sure how much money he'll be making as he is a salesman for a large computer company.

I wish I could really, but I think for now I have things under control. tomorrow he should be breathing easier, and the crusties should start to slowly disappear.

I have no doubt that this cute little guy is in THE most capable hands with you, Beth. :)

Keep us posted on his improvements, pretty please.

Didn't realise money was so tight, no worries! You sound like you've got it covered. I'd have suggested mites too. I think for now, dealing with any potential mite problem and pain relief is the best start.

See if after the mite treatment anything starts getting better, and let us know :)

....I hear clicking.....air sac mites!....those are the worst. right now the Ivermectin is working and every 5 seconds he is chewing and clicking, which means they are slowly dyeing. GOOD!!! die you suckers(sorry)
he's very quiet, not chirping at all, which is SO unusual for a budgie.

he really doesn't feel well. he was probably using all his energy at the pet store.
I just gave him some millet, and I sprinkled it with vitamins, ha ha.
he was sitting on his seed cup, so I gave him some good veggies/rice, wheat grass, etc....

I can't wait until he's better :)

It looks like scaley face to me which is mites. I read somewhere the home remedy treatment is by applying petroleum jelly on the beak, around the eyes, legs, etc. To the affected areas as it suffocates them and it needs to be re-applied daily.

I'm just so mad at that store, gosh they could have cared less about him.
Anyways, he's here now.

I've heard about petroleum jelly being used, and it is effective.
He's been treated with ivermectin for now, so in 10 days he'll get another dose of it, then 10 days after that. the baytril should hopefully kick the infection, if he has one, if not it certainly won't hurt him any.

....he's so quiet, but doing ok. :)

Poor little guy! So young! Glad you got him out of there!! Happy too that you have meds! I know when I got my budgie he didn't make a pip for the first 2 weeks so I wouldn't be too concerned. He's vocal now! :)

yes, I am glad too I was at the right place at the right time. the meds are an absolute relief to me knowing I have them here. one of my breeder friends has her degree in avian medicine, and has taught me so much, and I always err on the side of caution.

I just checked on him and he was eating his seed :)
that was so good to see, if he wasn't eating by tonight I would have hand fed him.

Thank goodness you saved him! You need to let the pet shop aware what he's got is contagious and they need to treat all their birds!!!

^^^^ HAHAHAH, Michael, you just answered a question I had...whether mites are contagious.

So that means ALL the birds in the store have them, right? Some worse than others, I suspect? And it it's not treated, can't the birds get a secondary infection which, in turn, can be deadly to them??

I JUST SAID THAT TO SARAH!,,, were your ears burning??:D
All mites are highly contagious, and yes I would suspect that most if not all of the budgies would now have air sac mites and scaley face mites.
there were 3 cages with budgies each containing 10-15 birds.
so there you go, it finally caught up to them!!! BAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!

I just checked on him again, and he has eaten a good amount of seed, picked at the wheat grass, and drunk some water. his poop is formed and not watery...whew.
I'm going to mist him soon, and then put a heat lamp on him, and tuck him in for the night. he needs a good sleep, then little Puffs will be ready for a new day tomorrow:p
I love rescuing when I can, it makes your heart feel good!!:D

If he had contact with the other birds, in close proximity to one another, etc. So basically yea they could all potentially have it.

How do you administer the meds? Is the Baytril in water? How much do you give of both?
My budgies have never had mites even though I heard about them. How do they get it?

Mikey, I'm sitting here reading what you said, and clearly I would not tell them without giving them a FULL PIECE OF MY MIND!
they will NOT treat any birds there, they really don't care.It will fall on deaf ears.

3 weeks ago, I noticed a society finch in one of the cages, clearly not well, hunched over, fluffed up, eyes looked very tired. I told the manager, and she said "we'll keep an eye on the bird"
I knew what that meant....they just don't care.
I saw that same bird today, and it's still puffy, and not well.
I would take my business elsewhere, but they are the only store locally that carry what I need.
