Blue took a chunk out of Daffy today.

Aka he ripped out several of Daffy's feathers; and nipped him quite well on the foot.

Still not letting him eat either.

So for the time being I've got Blue in a rather small cage, at least until I can figure out if I should seperate them fully or put them back together.

As I have no more room for cages out in the living room this makes this even harder.. bah.

No pictures of this.. Daffy won't stay still long enough.

Any other ideas?

And yes I know a small cage is not the best solution.. but it is the only spare cage I have at the moment.

Daffy is currently preening away happily away from Blue... which makes it harder because Blue is clearly miserable being away from the other birds.
Bah.

I hate doing it... but he just can't stop picking on the other birds.:blue2:

If you want two not-bonded birds to co-exist happily in one cage, it has to be a very large one with room for each bird to have its own feeder, perches, toys etc. It also needs to have plenty of places for the less dominant one to escape to without allowing it to be cornered and hurt by the dominant bird. A leafy branch could work for that. If you're feeling creative and have the time, another thing that helps a lot is gluing a whole heap of toilet roll cylinders together into a 'mountain'. Have them pointing every which way and the birds will soon be hiding in the holes and chewing on the cardboard. I got this idea from keeping mice, who *loved* their maze. Guess what? Birds love it too! Hope this helps a bit! :)

Edit: Forgot to say: for mice, you put it on the ground. For birds, you hang it.

Its a pretty large cage with several feeders; and an added portion above.

Blue follows Daffy around... most of the time there is no issue I feed them seperately food outside of the cage and inside.

Problem is they ARE bonded and the issue has gotten worse since Porter got here.

I think its a jealousy thing.

But I don't have room to move Porter to another room either.
Mrrf. Birds.

lols.

I think fully seperating them is the only option... meaning I have to set up the 'Other' cage.. aka the double decker rigged cage.

Aka a 17 length x 17 inch width with a smaller cage on top to give it a full 30 inches of height.

Heh. I'll buy a new cage later for now I don't dare dig into the bird budget because its 'allergy' season for Daffy... and she needs a vet visit soon

This might be a good opportunity to give them one on one training as well is my thought...

Niether bird is especially tame..

Blue is a female budgie.... female budgies can be rather mean little -itches!

Daffy looks like a male, and males are often push-overs when it comes to the females!

It's either a larger - wider - cage, or keep them separated if they don't get along! But truth is, even if they were living cage-free in a bedroom, Blue could still go after Daffy! The very sweet females are kind of rare!

And the cage is set up.. big enough fr a temporary cage for a solitary parakeet.

Another month and I can get a new one ^^..

Dimensions being ...

17x17x20T (at the tallest point.. I use this cage normally as a travel cage for Porter is shaped like a house.)+ 15x17x 17T With an overlapping hinge joint I made... we have a solid cage with a 17x17x28T. At the lowest point its 17x17, at the tallest 17x15.

I've used the same set up several times before as an emergency cage.. the only problem being that it cannot be easily taken appart.

Still.. no more fighting birds

New cage in a week or so. Heh.. since I'll be taking ALL the birds in at the same time.. I really can't shell out a hundred or so dollars for a new cage at least not right away xP; being that my budgies prefer taller to wider and I'd want one exactly like the one I had them both in... meh x.x.

If anyone can see a problem with it.. please point it out; So I can fix it properly. In the meantime... searching craigslist for something I can use.. though round here its rather slim pickings.

Meh.

Birdies be expensive.

It definitely explains her behavior! LOL

Why do they prefer taller than wide? Is it because they like being up higher? Would they not use more space in a wider cage?

I used to have a 30lx17tx20w custom made for them... and all they wanted to do was ESCAPE it (no open playtop).

Not entirely sure why; I ended up giving that cage to my sister for her finches.

The next cage I bought was an 18x18x26T- with an open playtop and they loved it.

I added a small cage to the top of it; rather than adding an open topped perch.. and they sit up there and absorb the sunshine.

Something about having a small space to relax in and sleep in the sunshine and wider living space below makes them happy.

As for Daffy... he uses the whole cage, usually on the floor in the morning rolling about the balls... hanging about on the bungee climbing from top to bottom and never moving. His favorite perch is in the middle of the cage. Its rather funny.... and Blue mimicks his behaviors, like parrotlets they use EVERY inch of the cage.

Who am I to argue?

Granted this was Quay Quay and Daffy... I don't think Blue cares either way. But I do like the opening playtops; and the very very large door that goes along with it.

Suffice to say, birdcages dominate my small living room; heh... another reason I have small birds and no large ones.

At least they can share a sleep cage... no battles while they sleep.. each one has their OWN perch and they stick to them. Mrrrf... another cat carrier would be a pain in the backside.

LOL! Well, I wonder what it was about that first cage that they didn't like???

I think as long as it works, they ought to be fine! Although now that Blue is becoming a feisty hen, it's either separating them or trying a larger cage again!

I'm probably going with seperation.

Temporarily Blue is in the cage I posted though a bigger one is on the horizon.

Because of all of this I had to cancel my deposit on the hand reared budgie I wanted.

I've got room for three cages, not four.

Heh.

So instead I'm going to try and tame Blue; Daffy's already an affenctionate little brat.

At least he is when Blue's not around.

My girls were pigs when it came to food! So I'd say that food would be the way to go to tame her! :)

Thats the plan!

Though right now she's flipping out wanting back in the other cage.

Maybe I should put her into another room until she adjusts.
