New and needing a bit of help with a Neumann's ringneck!

Hi guys! .... Im new to this site and i am looking for a bit of help! ... Myself and my partner love birds, his parents have a yellow naped amazon who was a rescue and he is amazing and my family used to have an aviery
for years when i was younger.

We were told about a Neumann's ringneck parakeet who was only 7 months old and she was for sale for £50, we were bothed shocked and snapped her up straight away as trying to get hold of a bird like that in the north east (uk) is like trying to find gold dust! we have had her now for about a month and a half and were having a few problems with her.
i have a few questions that might seem stupid but his parents parrot has never done the same things as our parakeet.

We were wondering if anyone elses bird bites the bars, but heavily, she really bites them and carries on for minutes not just a few seconds, and why? .... i can understand the attention side of this, but really trust me she gets alot! there is nothing you can do to stop her.

the next thing is her behaviour, i have read up about her kind before we got her, and i understand she will be a bit of a trouble maker but there is nothing we can do to stop her biting, she just randomly bites, but she has biten me on my face with no threat or anything, is there any way we can stop this or is there a reason for this? ....

she is a really happy bird, she doesnt stop singing and you can hear her trying to talk, she never shuts up and when i leave the room she goes crazy!!! ... we love her to bits but were just wondering what will be the next step to help get her tamed. she doesnt step up on your hand, but she loves a good stroke through the bars in the morning and night, she really isnt scared of anything. but we need a bit of help with the biting!!

Have you ever considered clicker training? I know alot of people say that it works wonders.

There are many things that can be done to avoid getting bit, but the best thing is to figure out why it's happening.

It may SEEM random, but I assure you she has a reason. Look for any patterns, no matter how odd they may seem. Does she bite at certain times of the day, when you are doing certain things, at certain places, anything.

What is her schedule like? Does she get enough out of cage time? Does she get enough sleep?

Biting the cage bars is not likely anything to worry about. Does it look more like she's pecking at the bar, or is she 'thrashing' it, or neither? Depending on how she's going at the bars it can mean different things.

Bev, I, too, am new to the site, and I also have an Indian ringneck parakeet...my Max is an Alexandrine. This may be odd, but is there a color she doesn't like? My bird hates the color red. He attacks the red parts of his toys first until their reduced to spinters/dust/etc., won't step up if you're wearing a red shirt and I can't wear red nail polish if I want to play with him.

Just a thought...as Auggie's Dad said, there's always a reason, even if we can't see it.

Another thing to try is when she bites, put hr on her cage and walk away without looking at her. This may take a little while, but eventually they will get the message.

I agree with AD though, you need to figure out why she is doing it as well.

P.S HRH Di, an Alexandrine isn't an Indian Ringneck. They are both species of Ringnecks.

I agree with AD, look for any signs of a pattern and go through her schedule.

Also, try looking around her habitat and finding anything that could possibly frighten her. Because, any fear of an object your bird might have could also cause tension or stress. Then, stress and tension can lead to biting and an overall very aggressive attitud. I found this out by reading, and the hard way. Pineapple is afraid of bright light and ceiling fans, and any sudden noises and movement.

Biting the cage bars could mean many different things, like AD said. It could be hormonal, not enough out-of-cage time, etc.
