Thought it was about time that I posted the story of Errol (Golden Mantle Rosella) and Flynn (Lineolated Parakeet). I rescued them about 3 years ago now, from what can only be described as Hell, They were in a cage with 2 other parakeets, the cage was one of the old budgie cages that I consider too small for one bird, let alone 4. The food and water well, well you couldn't even call it that it was just the seed shells and the water was a green slimey coo. Sadly 2 of the fids died shortly after I got them home, it took me 6 months to get them into the first cage, and I had to leave the old cage in the bottom of the new one, then another 6 months to get them into the cage that they are in now. It took me 2 years for them to even go near veggies, they had never had them before. I am still trying to get them onto a healthier sort of food and we are very nearly there. The only thing that I haven't been able to do in the whole 3 years that I've had them is get them out of the cage, the vet has said that I probably won't ever have them out, I have even had the door of the cage open all day, but they just sit and hide at the back of the cage. In the spring I am going to be building an aviary in the garden. I am lucky enough to have a bit of wasted land at the back of the garden. At least they will be able to fly around like fids should be able to do. The cage they are in at the moment will house 2 AG quite nicely so being small birds they can fly but not like they should. It has been a lot of hard work, but when I see them take a bath or hear them sing and watch them play, all the simple things, it really is well worth it, every heartbreaking moment. My only regret is that I could not save the other 2 long enough for them to know some sort of good life.
