My poor baby Muffin was bleeding profusely again from his tail last night. I had to douse it with flour to get the bleeding to stop. I think he broke another tail feather. It's so upsetting. He's eating and acting normal this morning, no blood, but I am very worried he lost a lot of blood last night.

Poor baby.

His cage is very large, so I'm not sure how it happened. We were out last night for a couple of hours, came home and then we found the blood. He has two crooked tail feathers, so I'll have to tell the vet about that.

why do these things happen when we go *out*??

if you can take the paper with you to show him the amount of blood(hopefully it's not in the garbage)

I'd be curious to know if your vet thinks it's a normal amount of blood, or excessive.
I wonder if birds can be *bleeders*??
sorry, Just thinking thru the keyboard

I'll be watching here to see what happens and wait for good news!

My awesome Wink.
I remember a couple months ago, when I had just got my bird Wink. I had just finished watching a movie. While my dad my sister and I were recalling parts the we liked, we heard a gasp from my room. My mom was in there looking horrified at my bird. When I looked I saw that he had cracked his beak in half and the outer part was only hanging by a thread. (sorry, no pictures). My mom called the vet I was really worried and my dad had a kind of annoyed face, I think my sister was in the bathroom. The vet said to see what it was like in the morning and if it was still bad we should bring him in.
That night I could barely go to sleep. I was so scared.
In the morning when I woke up Winks beak was absolutely fine.
It turns out we had just caught him while he was eating a rather juicy red seed.
The point of this story is that when your bird gets hurt, praying and thinking about them helps a lot, and if your not a vet its all you can do to help.
Pray and hope for Muffin and I garrenntee she will be okay.

My Oz broke some tail feathers too (waiting for 3 of them to grow back now! He's such a clutz ), but it never caused him any bleeding =( I hope little muffin will be okay!

Was muffin in complete darkness while you were gone? Oz will get night frights if he's left in the dark without a source of light and it's caused him to lose/break some feathers before!

Maria I'm glad that Muffin was eating and drinking and acting normally, that would indicate that he's not in any immediate danger. Seeing all that blood must of been frightful, I know it would be for me. Please keep us posted as to how the vet visit went, we're all keeping you all in our thoughts.

Thanks to everyone for all their concern. The vet I take him to is one of the top avian vets in the United States, and he took one look at him, and he said he was anemic. Muffin split his rump very badly (we do not know how). The rump name is some long word that begins with a "p" (what the vet told me). I cannot remember the name, but its where his tail feathers join to his body, but it wasn't a blood feather that caused the damage.

This is the regimen. They're keeping him at least one day overnight, giving him antibiotics, a glue suture, and iron supplements for the anemia. They're also giving him some high energy food IV or something like that. I'm not sure. They're going to see how the glue suture works, and if he breaks that open, the vet will use stitches. Yes, it was that bad, and it scared the crap out of me.

He's in really good hands right now, and all we can do is wait, but I really miss my baby.

The vet says he sees this injury quite often with baby parrots because they'e a bit clumsy.

I think I'll lower his other perch for now. I think he doesn't have as hard a time climbing up, but when it comes to coming down, it's a bit hard on him, and that's probably what happened when he was trying to get to some spray millet I left on his grate as I went out for the evening. I should have known better.

Ugh!

I guess we're very fortunate that I was able to get in for an emergency visit right away with a highly esteemed avian vet. He's probably one of two top vets recommended in my neck of the woods.

Thanks to everyone again!! I'll keep you posted.

No, he has a nightlight at bed time, but when we went out, we left the den light on for him. Thanks!

Oh Maria, well at least he is in good hands, it must be tough not having your baby and knowing he's in a strange environment over night - but that's what it takes someitmes. Did the vet mention how Muffin could have become anemic and what you can do to alleviate it as an issue going forward?

I'm going to ask all those questions when I get back to the office to take him home. I was a bit in shock mode when I was there, taking in all the information the vet was giving me. You never think these horrible accidents can happen to your bird, or any pet, because we all think we're such fabulous caretakers, nothing bad can happen. . . . WRONG.

To be honest, I wasn't surprised that Muffin was anemic, he bled profusely last night, and the only way I could get it to stop was to use flour on it. I sat up very late last night with him to calm him and make sure there was no more bleeding before I put him to bed. There was so much blood, it was all over my hands, and his tail. It was pretty garish and awful. I would have rushed to the vet that night if I could, but I got in first thing this morning.

I'm just glad he's being cared for by professionals now, and our Dr. is one of the best, so I take comfort in that, although it sucks that poor little Muffin is probably very scared to be in such strange circumstances and environment. I can only imagine how stressful it must be, and that bothers me a great deal, but you have to do what you have to do.

Update: Muffin is back home and on an antibiotic and a probiotic. He hasn't been picking at his glued up wound, and he seems sooo happy to be with us now. We have to be very careful he doesn't land on his rump on a hard surface, so I had to lower all his perches, and put a soft blanket, and paper towels over his cage grate.

Our vet is awesome. Here's a picture I found of him rescuing and helping a wounded Bald Eagle. Wow, and I thought large Macaws could be scary!! Eeeek! Beautiful animal though.

Oh my goodness look at that eagle - at those claws! I'm very glad to hear Muffin is back home and happy to be so, and I know you are as well. I'm glad you updated, I was wondering

Thanks Gary!! He has to go for a follow-up visit in two weeks.

Those claws are deadly weapons. I look at my sweet delicate little Muffin, and at that Eagle, and I see two creatures at the opposite end of the bird spectrum. LOL!

I am so relieved for you that he is back home....poor muffin!
was the word "prolapse?"...if it was that can be very serious.

on occasion I give my birds organic iron drops, mostly my canaries and finches.
they seem to be more prone to it, due to being just seed eaters...along with veggies etc..

it just goes to show you how a lack of nutrients can affect a bird(I'm in the same boat with calcium for Tundra, and have switched to a liquid calcium supplement.
