OMG! I can't believe it! There's a cockatiel in my backyard! Well it was in my backyard. It was in my tree. i tried to catch it and was so close but now it's on the property of the house behind me! It is tame and says "pretty boy". It's obviously a lost pet. How do I catch it? If I climb the neighbours fence I won't be able to get back up!

Knock on the neighbors door and ask to go into their yard. Bring a cage and food if you have it.

Ok so I walked the block and found the house. Knocked on the door. No answer so I snuck around the back through a side gate (I felt like such a criminal!). Anyway I caught him pretty easily and bought him back in a small cage! I now have a 4th cockatiel! I'm going to call him Moses because it's like a message from God that I keep finding these lost cockatiels! Of course, I'll need to try and find his owner befor I can call him mine...he's really pretty white body and bright yellow face. and talks!

Put your cockatiel's cage outside where the bird can hear them calling: he'll probably come to them. You need to be ready with a towel or sheet to toss over him. Ideally, you'd have an empty cage with food in it which you could slam shut on him as soon as he hops inside. Or, the old box-on-a-stick trick works if you're quick enough. I hope you catch him, poor thing, before a hawk does! PLEASE let us know how you get on!

Good luck!

Oh, and call out 'pretty boy' in the same voice as his. He might recognise it and fly to you. :)

Betrisher I found him! I posted that above. @petoftheday - spot on!! I can't believe this! I'm not going to risk a tame bird dying in the wild, it's a tough world out there for a house bird!

YAY!!!! You clever, brilliant woman!!!! Isn't it the best feeling when you've got the bird safe in your hands and you know it was your own hard work that caught him? I'm so glad! Yeah, I must've posted just as you were catching him. Heeheeheehee! Well done! Now, sit down and have a nice cuppa and pat yourself on the back. You ROCK!!! :D :D :D

When I climbed up the tree to catch him he said "pretty boy". I've never heard a cockatiel talk b4 so I am thrilled! He's not making much noise now obviously because he's scared, but I'm looking forward to hearing him speak once he settles in!

WOW Lisa, that's AMAZING. You just said to me yestereday 'I'm from the land of cockatiels but I've never seen one wild' lol - not that this one is wild, but what a cool experience and a great outcome - and he's SO PRETTY!! I've never seen or heard a cockatiel talk either, so that's very cool as well. Good on you for taking the time and making the effort to catch him. - looking forward to the updates :)

thanks Gary...yeah I'm amazed to find him too! That's why I've named him "Moses". There will be plenty of updates to come. For now I have him stored away in my bedroom (it's nearly 7pm here). I just want to keep him quiet. I hope he gets through the night ok.

Wow, what an adventure. Great work. Now he's safe and sound with you. Let's see if the owner looks for him in a big way, i.e. @petfinder, some fliers, etc. If not, then he's meant to be with you Lisa.
