poor thing my friend says it's a feather duster budgie i feel sorry for it i mean how would you feel if you had feathers in your face and them being that long.!!!

it would be horrible to breed one of them and they don't live long but it would be a cool experiance but i would be feeling sorry for it way to much. it sooooooooo cute though

He's a 'feather duster'

I just think it's horrible, it's all recessive genes and stuff so unless you've got too budgies with the feather duster gene then it's not going to happen. They're not THAT rare if you're a breeder then you might see one or two popping up every now and then... sad really. People have to clip the feathers around the eyes so they can actually see. They generally die from um, like, lack of energy, so during moults and stuff because they can't consume enough energy providing food for them to last through the intensive time a moult is.

They don't fly and generally don't perch.

I think it's horrible.

They usually have a life span measured in weeks or months. They are pretty rare but you can get them pop up now and again. They die from lack of nutrition because all of it goes into growing their feathers. They do moult but it doesn't show, as in pin feathers and such. Sometimes if a feather duster get clipped around the face it will die from bleeding and/or shock.

I think Budgies are great just the way they are, selective breeding is not necessary.

I agree...selective breeding is very seldom necessary, nature should take care of it for us. Just look what selective breeding has done to dogs. I love my dogs but every single breed out there has a laundry list of health problems. "Muts" are always lots healthier and smarter.

I you knew if your birds carried that gene, you would just not pair them up with another bird that carried the gene. I don't think most people would breed them on purpose.

You'd be suprised, people really do breed these types of birds on purpose.
Just look at the frizzle polish chicken:

and the silkie:

It suprises me what man comes up with.

I have both of those chickens, the difference to feather dusters is that the feathers do not continuely grow. Not one of the breeders I know would purposely breed a feather duster.

You own these two? Wow, I didn't know you fancied chickens yourself. I love 'em all.

Sorry to be so off-topic to this thread, but do you own any other breeds of fancy chicken? Just curious.

Umm... we have one other that I'm not sure of the name. At the moment we only have three fancy chickens and some good egg layers. The dad of my frizzle won something at a show and we got them off a breeder. My silkie I 'think' is a rooster and the other two are hens. I am looking to show them when I am older, but unfortunately the silkie has curly toe.
