In another thread, I've discovered that Doris is probably a boy. Here are my birds, Tony is the one with the cheeks and Doris is the grey one. Are they boys?

If Doris is a boy, I think I will rename him. Any suggestions?

I don't know much about tiels but I seem to recall reading somewhere that only males have the blush spots? Not sure though... I'm thinking now, Beth has a tiel named Blush because of her blushes and she's a girl... Clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about so I will bow out now... :54:

If Doris does turn out to be a boy, I'd name him RuePaul (for hiding his maleness so well

Hey, Apple! I am 100% certain that Tony is a male. The yellow of the head and those bright orange cheeks are definite telltales. Doris I'm not so sure about, since he/she has been bred for that appearance. MikeyTN might be your best bet on that.

Yup! They are both males! And gorgeous at that! One, if not both, might also be split pied!

Split pied birds have the 'tick marking' on the back of their heads. Some may show other signs of being split pied, however that's the most common trait of split pied birds. My whiteface male also had the tick marking, which you can see in this photo.

He's a normal whiteface, which looks exactly the same as a normal grey minus the yellow and orange pigmentation. A female would not have the white face mask, she would have en entirely grey face -- like this.

Anansi, I once had a whiteface hen as well. She looked similar to the hen above.

I also have a pied hen, and a cinnamon pearl pied hen. Both have clear faces and orange cheek patches! Both have also laid eggs.

Neither one have grey faces, however that's because of the pied gene. Even if Casey (cinnamon pearl pied) wasn't pied, she still might have a clear face due to the pearl gene.

Here is a picture of a normal male split pearl and a pearl hen (father and daughter). As you can see, the pearl hen has a mostly clear face, but not as clear as her father's face is. However, pearls are easy to sex anyway as hens keep their pearls and males lose them! (a pearl male will molt out to look similar to a normal male)

I don't know why I didn't find this out when I adopted them, I just accepted what the previous owner told me. As I have never gone into breeding I don't much care about what sex they are.

That last pearl girl is gorgeous. Is that Casey?

Nope, that's Sunshine! Named by her previous owner. She was a hand raised bird that ended up getting ignored when her owner discovered girls and sports. When she came to me, she showed no interest in interacting with me. Once she started wanting my attention (well, to feed her in the mornings!), I decided to place her in a pet home where she could become a pet once more.

And you are both welcome, Anasi and strudel!

Doris has a sort of "lone ranger" mask, little strips of grey from her beak to her eyes. Tony has it too, although you can't see it in the photo because he's dancing and his face is turned to the side. Who was that masked weiro?

Thanks, s/he is lovely. It's funny, but when they came, Tony was the "friendly one" and she was practically "wild" and now she's the one I've managed to "tame" the most compared to Tony who bites and runs away more.

I'm finding it a bit hard to adjust to "her" change in status. Doris doesn't suit "him", I'm going to have to change it, but what to.... lots of good suggestions, but what suits?

I can't imagine what it must have been like for Cher when Chas Bono had his gender realignment.
