A lone budgie hen, soon to have friends and a family.
Hello, I was just wondering if a new budgie is supposed to be very quiet. I just got my budgie 4 days ago and he is very quiet and somewhat lethargic. He is not fluffed up, he is eating and drinking, and he is pretty tame already. He is a 6 or 7 week old lutino budgie and loves cheek rubs. I got him a huge cage but he's not moving around much. Also he sneezes often. Is this normal? And if it's not, how much would it cost to take him to an avian vet? Thanks!

I don't have as much knowledge with budgies as I do cockatiels but as far as any birds being quiet is completely normal. He's in a new strange environment as nd it could take a few days maybe even a week+ for them to stay getting more comfortable and make their noises. Also, I'm not sure what's a normal age for budgies to be weaned but with tiels, 6-7 weeks is way too young. Normally they are not fully weaned from parents or even if they are hand raised until 10-12 weeks of age and sometimes take as long as 16 weeks. I'd be a little concerned he was sold too young and go to an avian vet. Call around the vets in your areas and ask as far as prices; I know in my area they charge you a fee just for an visit and cant quote a price on what the vet may do until you are already there. Also, where do you live and where is his cage? Make sure isn't near your kitchen especially if your cooking and no household products like air fresheners are being used as they will very much make them ill and kill birds. But definitely take to be checked out by a vet, I'm concerned he was sold to you too young unless a budgie owner/breeder can give you better info on that. I wouldn't think they would be much different then cockatiels.

I don't know how old he is he is probably like 3-5 months or so and the cage is as far away from the kitchen. So he's probably just nervous. But what about the sleepiness?
He is sitting on me right now preening... Lol

It sounds totally normal - my two little budgies didn't make a chirp during the first week and just sat still on the perch. They didn't even eat or drink in my presence, but they were not tame. If your budgie gets fluffed up and too sleepy you probably should consider the vet. But as for now it seems fairly normal to me. Keep talking to him gently and maybe let out of cage in a few days so he wouldn't get too bored. :)

You said 6-7 weeks thats under two months old. Regardless please consult with a vet just to be safe. Other than that he should be ok.
