2 Parakeets, Martin and Pipsqueak
This is Martin (broken wing) and Pipsqueak. They came from Petsmart. Martin was adopted out to me so I could take him to an avian vet tomorrow. I brought Pipsqueak home with Martin because I didn't want him to be lonely. I actually thought they were both girls, but now I think Martin is a boy and Pip is a girl. It's my understanding that as long as I don't give them a nest, they won't make eggs, right?

By the way, is that perch okay? They have a smaller fir perch, but they seem to like this one best.

Poor sweetie. Thank you for taking him and getting him the vet care he needs. Even if they don't have a nest, they can still lay eggs. However, if you want, you can order some fake eggs online so that when they do lay eggs, you can swap them and toss the real eggs. Just make sure she gets plenty of calcium since laying eggs takes allot out of a gal! :)

And yes, that perch seems okay. My conures have perches that are very large for their size, but they have perches of many sizes, not ONLY large ones. The important thing is varying dimensions so they exercise their feet. :)

I also bought them a gym LOL.

Will laying eggs kill her sooner? Calcium is cuttlebone, right? If I toss the eggs, there's a chance they're fertile, right? Will her laying make them territorial?

I bet they'll love it. :) Budgies can be great mimics, so keep an ear out for familiar sounds or words. They sound like little robots LOL

Yes, they might be fertile if you have a male and female. And cuttlebone is a good source of calcium, as well as fresh foods and things like crushed eggshells (if you ever make boiled eggs) :)

I don't think it'll kill her sooner. As long as she's healthy otherwise. Impulse laying, though, can be a problem. Impulse laying can happen if she lays eggs and you remove them and don't replace them with fake eggs, she'll want to keep laying to replace them.

She may be territorial. You might have to distract her with a treat or something while you swap the eggs, and then let her sit on them until she realizes they won't hatch and leaves them alone.

So Martin has a bright pink cere and Pip's is kind of pinkish blue with white around the nostrils. So I'm right on the genders, right?

it looks like martin and pipsqueak have found a good home :)
depending on the color mutation, usually the males have a blue cere and the females have a pinkish cere, so Martin sounds like a female, and Pipsqueak sounds like a male.
best of luck to you!

I house two bonded GCC together and was also worried about calcium deficiency. I asked an avian DVM he said there is nothing wrong with a hen laying as long as what's used is being replaced if they do start nesting and she lays eggs make sure to change her diet. I know a few brands make a special formula with extra calcium and d3 such as roudybush. The only negative of laying is the risk of egg binding so keep an eye on her behavior.

What things would I need to watch for?

Swollen vent, constipation, other signs of illness really. If she's swollen and lethargic, she may be egg bound, and should be taken to an AV right away. But otherwise, as long as she's laying and being healthy.. then not too much to worry about. :)

Just make sure she gets a good diet, lots of vitamins. That's important for anyone, especially those laying eggs! :D
