Riley-white faced grey cockatiel (hatch date 6-28-2014) RIP Halloween-pied cockatiel
Searching the craigslist pet section tonight (it's a regular thing for me idk why but I always want to see whats available and you never know what you'll find that you might need). Well I came across this ad of somebody looking for a male cockatiel expecting it to be for breeding purposes (which is usually the case when someone wants a gender speific animal but sometimes it's for other reasons, for example if I was to get another dog it would HAVE to be a female because even though Rocky is neutured he has a major issue with unneutured males and is an alpha male therefore a female is the only possible companion for him) I was prepared to flag it but I read it anyways and this person had done there research atleast more so than most people looking for a first time bird and wanted a male based on the characteristics of a typical male. So I told them about my breeder but they were told they only had females. So I gave them the name of another breeder but they had already contacted them so I gave them some more advice told them that the closest major city seems to have quite a few birds available and young ones mostly there are a few that are older and one I didn't tell them about giving away free cockatiels because these birds had be in an avairy all their lives and never handled. This person thanked me for being so helpful. Then I kinda got carried away being helpful and told them about this forum and definately reccommeded it because this place is the ONLY place I have found that if I have ANY issues question or anything where I can get good answers, I then reccommeded another site and let them know that apparently many breeders in our area don't realize that with the white faced, lutino, fallow and really any other where the check coloring can be obsured that unless you do a DNA test you have to wait for the first molt to tell if it's a male or female because the females will have bars on the tail and males won't. I mentioned this speifically because theres one breeder in particular that is guarnteeing genders based on if their pied or pearled. They claim that the pearls are all females because it's genetically impossible for their pair to have pearled males and the same for pied females. Clearly not that knowledgable about genders and coloring for them to be claiming that. Anyways after sending that email back to them I realized it is quite possible that I over stepped my bounds. However, it would be nice to have a fellow cockatiel lover close by.:yellow1: :grey::white1:

Well, look at it this way- we all get a little carried away when we're passionate about a subject:) I think a few people asking 'friendly' questions about parrots in general (no intention of ever owning one) got quite the informative earful about behavior and intelligence and mental stimulation and how you deal with hormones ext...:54:

Hope you've made a new friend with similar interests;)

Hopefully lol I'd like to hang out with bird people who actually care about there birds as more than decoration. When I get Riley (gender neutral name since I'm leaning towards the white faced baby but will know for sure when I go see them Tuesday) s/he won't be locked in a cage all day they will have time out of the cage to play and get to see the dog from a safe distance as the dog will be crated when the birds out.
