Many of you remember earlier in the year when a friend and I went through a very emotional time trying to save some baby budgies. 6 of the 8 babies survived, but only 2 of the 10 adults are still alive. The babies were adopted out with very specific and amendment instructions that should that home be unable to care for them, they be returned to us. A few weeks ago I saw that one of the families was moving off island. I contacted the woman and checked in, asking if she needed help with anything, was she going to be able to take the birds with her, was she SURE and made sure she knew that, no matter what, if things changed I would take the birds back no judgement. She swore up and down that she would NEVER consider parting with them, and that she had already paid for their flights and I had nothing to worry about. Today my neighbor across the street who knows I like birds sent a me a screen shot of a facebook garage sale page that I am not a part of, a post giving away "free baby parakeets." My first thought was "more budgies is the last thing I need." but I glanced through anyway, and was stunned to find MY BUDGIES (no longer babies) being given away for free by someone I had never even heard of! I went full on drama on a different page for the same area, and got people to help me contact the lady who was giving them away. She had been given them by the woman who insisted she would never part with them, RIGHT AFTER she told me she had already paid for them to fly!! The lady who was now giving them away was very understanding and quick to give them to me when I explained the situation. We went to pick them up, found them in a cage half the size of the one I gave her with plastic budgie dowels, and the only wood or chew toy in sight was a tiny dowel ladder. These babies already had deformed beaks and I had been VERY CLEAR on the need for natural perches and wood to chew on, cuttle bone, etc.

My friend and I loaded them in the car, me shaking and her in tears. These babies will NOT be looking for new homes ever again. I understand not keeping them, but I WARNED her of the price to ship them before she took them home, and then I CHECKED with her when her husband got orders and I OFFERED to take them back!!

Some people may wonder why we are so upset if we rehomed them in the first place, but we never intended to keep them, we just wanted to keep them ALIVE. I can't keep every bird I take out of a bad situation, and these guys were NOT in a good place. I think the fact that 80% of the adults died within 4 months is pretty informative of just how bad it was.

Ugh I am just LIVID. Well they are back with us now. Hanging with Marie and Toulouse at the home of fellow member and co-rescuer amjokai.

I'm so sorry you had to find out you were lied to :( To some people our fids are "just birds", and expendable. I am very glad you found them and that they are back where they belong. God speed to you, you deserve it.

Lets just say it was a very emotional afternoon! I am so relieved to have them back where they belong, but so frustrated that they were not safe even in a home I very carefully selected.

So, if she changed her mind after she'd spoken to you, why didn't she offer them back? Because she'd sold their cage? Sheesh, some people have no soul. :(

Oh no!! What's wrong with some people?! If she had no intention of keeping them why would she not take you up on your offer and lie to you instead? Makes no sense. Ugh I could imagine... It's frustrating even reading it. Not only the poor birds, but being flat out lied to!

It's like she couldn't confront you with it, although you made it clear to her you'd take them back with no hard feelings. That disgusts me. I'm really sorry. I just don't understand some people!

Im glad that at least you have your babies back safe, and know they'll have a better life.

The budgie on the far right looks like it's not sitting properly. the legs seem to be further apart then the others.

SilverSage so sorry you had to go through this terrible ordeal. I just don't understand how some people can be so mean and cruel to animals..........GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY!!!!!! So glad you and your friend were able to rescue them. I hope they will be ok and you find good homes for them. God bless you.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
That's why I have so much trouble letting go. I know how I treat them. I know how I want them to be treated. I know what environment they thrive in.

I don't know if the people I am entrusting them too will give them that. Or even really, care, once the novelty of parrot ownership wears off.

I suppose, as aggravating as that person was, it worked out ok in the end. At least you discovered them before they went to somebody who didn't know how to care for them, and you now know that they'll get the care they deserve. They're very lucky to have had you rescue them TWICE.

Actually they went to a lady who had them for her three year old for a month, and was giving them away because the kid wasn't taking care of them. By the time we found them a woman who was buying them for her two year old was already on her way to pick them up. Seriously people!

It was also sad to see how untameable they had become. After being handfed and loved the way they were, they were wild when we picked them up. One month of neglect doesn't turn a budgie wild, so I know the original adopter didn't handle them. They don't act like they were abused, just neglected.

Who the heck buys pets for 2 and 3 year olds?! It doesn't matter if it's a goldfish or a dog or a bird, CHILDREN are wholly incapable of caring for another living being, even if they like to PRETEND to care for their toys and are a good natured child. The brain capacity simply isn't there yet, so unless it would be a family pet the parents cared for, best not to bring it home. What is wrong with people?

That is severely messed up. :( I would be super upset!! I'm so glad you got them back. But seriously, why would that lady lie to you?? She was giving them away free, why not just give them back to you? I don't understand.

Amen to the rant about children's ages! And I dont understand why she didnt give them back, it made me really mad, but now I am just relieved they are home where they belong. Actually, they are living with my friend, the one who posted the picture. They are not living at my house right now. She and I did all this together, and she happens to have more space in her flock right now. They will stay with us for the rest of their lives we are NOT doing this again.

The lighter bird, Ducky, is the one who had his beak curved upward like a shovel when we got him because of how badly the feces were caked on. She knew he would need regular vet care for his beak, yet she told his new owners NOTHING about that, and just said they were "rescue babies."

And I dont understand why she didnt give them back
Especially since you'd made it clear you'd have them, and had kept an interest. It's different if she'd just got them from somebody who'd handed them over without a backward glance. Very strange. Maybe she realised you'd notice that they hadn't been kept tame and thought she'd be criticised. (well she's even more so, anyway, so that didn't work)

The only thing I can think of is that she knows I breed birds and might have thought me evil because of it, and not wanted to give them back to me for that reason? But after the in depth discussion I had with her about the reasons these birds MUST NOT be bred, and how to prevent it, I just dont know. She claimed to be "hard core into dog rescue" so maybe her views from that influenced it somehow? But we said in touch a bit, I checked in a few times, even went and brought her bird food one time when she ran out (one care family, small child, pregnant mom, puppy trying to die on them, I could understand the mix up), and she never mentioned anything like that.
