Scarlet chested babies

My scarlet chested parakeets laid four eggs last November. Two hatched so now I am the proud owner of the two cutest little birds in town!

Re: Scarlet chested babies

Below is the latest pic of the baby fluff balls. They have grown so much.
This is the first time that I have hand raised scarlet chested parakeets so I am very curious to see how they develop as pets. They are not noted as a good species to hand raise as pets so I am hoping that they turn out OK. Currently they are happy to sit on my shoulder and hand so that is a good start.

Re: Scarlet chested babies

It is amazing how their different personalities start to show from a young age. Magellan, the baby on my wrist is the more inquisitive bird, weighs 2-3 grams more than its sibling (Gimli), is a noticeably bigger bird and rarely begs for food. After a feed, he will look around and then go for a flutter across the room though sometimes he will go exploring around the house.
Gimli hatched 24-36 hours after Magellan and begs for her food like there's no tomorrow. He will usually stay on the feeding basket though now and again he will fly off for a look see. They learnt to land in a couple of days though for some reason they kept bouncing into the ceiling.
Currently they are on one - two feeds a day (Neocare) and really enjoy, broccoli, sprouts and snow peas. The only time that they show any interest in toys (Budgie size) is if I place some millet on it. Today is the first time that I have seen them take a drink of water - falling into the water bowel doesn't count!

Re: Scarlet chested babies

They are so adorable! It must be so rewarding hand raising. Personally, I think I would be too nervous that I would mess something up!
