I just got the call that Grandma's Canary passed away last night. Not sure how long they live but he was probably 10ish. Sweet little bird, the tamest Canary I have ever known. RIP Sunny!

Now Mom wants to go get Grandma a parakeet! When I asked "why a parakeet, why not another Canary?" she says "because any bird will probably outlive Grandma and if I get her a parakeet you can take it, but I know you don't want a Canary"

Grandma will be 94 in a few months, and I know she loves having a pet. She's in an assisted living and can't take care of a cat or dog, so her bird was her company everyday. The girls that help take care of Grandma there are really good about making sure the paper gets changed daily and fresh food and water is given a couple times a day, so I have no problem with Grandma having another bird to keep her company.

I just didn't know I will be inheriting it when the time comes... I guess I better go with Mom to pick it out....

Lol, it has been brought to your attention that you WILL once again have a Budgie :). You better go with her and pick out the little cutie :D

I'm also surprised they let them have a bird in assisted living.

Yeah, it's something that helped with our decision on where to place her years ago when she couldn't live alone anymore. And the staff has been great helping take care of Sunny this whole time, knowing Mom and I can only get there a couple times a week and Grandma just can't do it by herself anymore.

Mom's logic...LOL...she is always telling me I don't need another bird, I have Zilla. Now she wants me to pick out a bird for Grandma that will be a bird I can take when the time comes...LOL

Well, they do specify "small caged bird" in the contract, they just didn't know we let Sunny out whenever Mom and/or I went to see Grandma! He really was very tame for a Canary. He knew "step up" and "come out" and "go home" and he LOVED to "beat up" the Beanie Babies Grandma has in the window sill! :D

I will be going to pick out the cutest little Budgie... Kind of excited...

I'm excited for you!! Where do you think you'll be going to get the budgie?

I've heard of Canaries being super hand tame before. Recall trained and sitting on shoulders. It's amazing that finch types can get that tame.

I'm sorry about Sunny.

It's really sweet of your mom to want to get another bird for your Grandmother. Very considerate of your mom to let you help choose. :)

We will go to the Bird Hut to get the Budgie! :D

I know I should stay away from that place, it's BAD for me to go there, but I just don't trust the petco or petsmart for birds and those are the only choices near me.

At least Mom gets to foot the bill for this one and will buy the bird I choose and the food I choose and the toys I choose!!! :D She at least defers to me on anything bird related that I do know what I'm talking about! :D

I did mean to say that I'm sorry about Sunny. I really did say 'aww oh no' when I read it. Sometimes I feel so rude... I think the right thing in my head, but doesn't always come out my mouth (or in typing in this case) :). 10 years is a good full lifespan for a finch, so I'm guessing same for a Canary. That's a long time to be attached to a pet!

Thanks Allee! Mom is kinda nice that way sometimes!

She is only letting me choose it cause she knows I will be getting it later on, and she wants me to pick out a nice healthy pretty one! :D

I got Twigs and his late friend Pix at Petsmart. Thankfully the tested free of disease lol. Except Pix had bad genetics which effected his organ function (which is why he passed away young) despite a good diet. That's the risk with getting the mass produced budgies that they get at the big chain stores. That particular Petsmart always had the prettiest unusual color mutations.

I am also so sorry for the loss of Sunny:(
Your Grandma will be so happy with her new little budgie! My great aunt had canaries right up until the end of her life, and they were so much company for her. She would sing and do a little dance in front of their cage, and she always called the little crested one her "Hippie" bird:)
Please share pics after you pick up the new family member!

Sorry to hear about Sunny! Canaries are nice birds, we used to have a male gloster named Bertrind and he passed away at 7, he wasn't tame but would sing his little heart out, we found a female for him that we named Belinda :)

Anyway, parakeets are fun little birds, your Grandmother will love him/her! Of course you'll take pictures of the new addition won't you?:D

Thanks for all the condolences! Sunny was a great bird and was so much company to Grandma. They sang and talked to each other, and Grandma swears he watched TV with her (he couldn't see the TV from where his cage was, but he probably chattered at the sounds and voices)

We will probably go either tomorrow or Wed. to get the new addition and I will get some pics so I can share with you guys!

We have a timbrado canary named Steve. He has a lot of personality. I think they are great pets.

Budgies love to play, play, play which your grandma will probably enjoy watching. IMO they are very noisy, way noisier than my mac or sennies, so it should be good company for her.

I had a budgie years ago, and Grandma can't hear (refuses to wear her hearing aids) so I'm not worried about the noise he will make.

She will love watching him play, she used to love watching my budgie play.

I'm going to make sure we get a young one, most likely male as I think the males are a bit easier to tame, but we'll see what they have when I get there and which one just jumps out at me as "the one"

Steve is the canary with the funny "hair do" isn't he? You got him not too long ago?

That's the one. I'd have to look it up, but I think we've had him around 6 months. He sings beautifully. It's fun listening to him while we get ready for work.

I love that your Canary is named Steve :). Makes me smile every time I see that lol.

I have to agree about Budgies being VERY noisy. My boy (also when I had 2) either singing, chattering, or SCREAMING more often than not! I had no idea what I was in for when I first got budgies. Doesn't matter if Twigs is out of his cage, in his cage, and no matter what he's doing, he's noisy. I admit I do enjoy the singing and warbling. I just wish he never screamed.

Edit: I was posting at the same time... I just read about your grandmother not being bothered by the noise ;)
