My grandma has 9 parakeets and one is a blue and white and another is also blue with some white on it's wings but for some reason these two are starting to get yellow feathers on there heads. I've never seen this in her birds and one of them she's had for 2-3 years the other only since mothers day and it's not like something is on the feather the feathers are just turning colors. I have a suspsion that it's because she switched them back to a seed diet after having them on pellets for only a month if that. More or less the birds are on a horrible diet only the occassional peice of lettece and such. It's only happend over this last week though cause I saw them last week and they were normal coloring then I looked at them this morning and they weren't

See siggie :)
Lettuce is not very good for budgies. It sounds as though there is a calcium perch in there. Very unlikey but they could be yellowfaces or goldenfaces. I say they've been chewing on something.

Interesting, I'd think a week would be very quick to see drastic change in feather colour. I'm gonna go with Ratzy and say they have been chewing on something. Is there anything in there they could be chewing on, including their droppings?

I remember my tiel's feathers went pink once when I gave her a red calcium perch. She doesn't get those anymore.

I agree with both Ratzy and Ben, it couldn't possibly be that the feathers are now growing a different color because it couldn't happen so fast. It's either that they are eating something that is staining their faces or it could also be vitamin A deficiency. Birds with avitaminosis A get low grade infections in their respiratory tracts. In budgies, it usually starts with sinusitis and the yellowish stain is the discharge from the nares. Please ask her to give them dark leafy greens (dandelion greens are excellent) as well as cooked sweet potatoes and grated carrots.

ok so I went over there today and it's not a beak conditioner that she has it's one of those yellow pineapple mineral treats lol. And believe me I've tried talking to her and getting her to do better by her birds she atleast keeps the cage relatively clean. Today she sent me to Petsmart and I got her birds some shreddable toy that is a 30ft roll that you cut as big as you want and tie it to the cage and let them shred it and some varied perches cause she just had 2 wooden ones an plastic one that came with the cage and atleast some better quality seeds than she gives (the $2 walmart kind) and instead of sandpaper bird cage liners i got her this kind thats soft and absorbant.

Why don't you get them some leafy greens and just go over and put them in their cage (some hanging from the bars but some laying dripping wet at the bottom of the cage)? I bet that when she sees how much they enjoy them and how cute they are bathing themselves in the ones at the bottom of the cage, she will continue doing it.
