I also wanted to get my last budgie from a breeder, and a quality one too. I just couldn't find any. You tend to get a better bird from a breeder who is conscientious about the health, genetic strength, and overall quality. Not just someone who isn't knowledgeable about breeding putting their male and female together randomly.

I got Mink my English budgie handfed from a local bird shop. What part of CA are you in?

Hi! Yeah I got my last budgie from a petstore called Kahoots and he was not in the best condition!! He's all better now though!

It's really hard finding a breeder near me and I also don't want the bird shipped! I live in the Inland Empire region of California.

Perfect! Omar's Exotic Birds. OMAR'S Exotic Birds :: Parrots and Bird Supplies, Orange County and Santa Monica, CA You could go to the Brea location. Mink came from the Lake Forest location. Omar, the owner is Mink's breeder. Much of the time he has his handfed English budgies in at least one of the stores. If one of his farther stores have one, they can probably transfer it to Brea. If they don't have any budgies at this time, they do frequently throughout the year. Not a ton of them like at a large name pet store, they usually have 1-3 in the store at a time.

Mink is a beautiful, soft little cutie, and she is hand tame, although the more she gets 'involved' with my American budgie Twigs (who is pretty much wild), the wilder she is getting. Still, I couldn't be happier with the quality bird she is.

Omar's really impressed me when I purchased Mink. She was about done weaning, but they wouldn't let her go home until she was almost a couple weeks past, to make sure I wouldn't have problems. They also recommend bringing the bird back 3 days later for a weight check (I had my own scale), but this store really goes above and beyond like that. They also give papers on bird care (whether you need it or not), free bag of millet, seed, and a free toy, and a paper for a discount with selected avian vets that they work with. Mink was healthy, and disease free. Oh, and she was weaned onto vegetables at the store!

English budgies are known for being much larger, quieter, and calmer than 'regular' budgies. They're so adorable.

Check them out :)

Wow, you are lucky Julie! I had a parakeet when I was young..oh about 30 years ago. Loved him a ton. He talked a lot and was a sweety. If I could find another like him I'd probably add a parakeet to the flock.

I love budgies! :) I've had birds for a long time, but budgies only since Christmas 2012. Funny, for me they weren't my "beginner birds", they were a more recent discovery lol. I wish I could get more English budgies, but I don't want anymore mess and poop to clean right now than I already have. It's too bad that handfed Mink is going wild because of Twigs' influence. She wasn't human bonded enough at the time when I introduced her to Twigs.

As far as the super tame, talking budgies, I think they're kept as an only budgie, otherwise they'd rather be with their own kind.

I think you can keep them tame if you really hang out with them a lot. I inherited my great grandma's parakeet when she passed away. She had had an older female who bonded with mine immediately. She was quiet wild and could really nail me surprisingly hard. Cookie, my parakeet I was able to still take out and just carry him about away from her and he was a doll. I did do a lot of bribery with bad human food...but ya know a way to mans heart and all.

same here, i spent months trying to find a breeder, i searched in like a 12 hour radius, not a single one called me back and i didnt get a single reply on hoobly either :( eventually i said forget it and got a budgie from petsmart. i also had same experience with conures so im more inclined to buy from pet stores now even though i dont like mass breeding and the way they treat their animals.

I also know of a top breeder of handfed English, but she is in Ohio I think. Although shipping a bird is completely safe, it hardly makes sense to me when the cost of shipping is more than the bird itself. Although expect to pay 4-5 times more for a handfed quality English than a pet store budgie, but worth it.

Yeah, I've looked into shipping but they are crazy expensive! I have emailed Omar's so I'm just waiting for a reply :)

I had an amazing EB named Peter. He came to my ex and I flighted, and never handled. Within 2 weeks, he was stepping up, would sit with me, and was just such a wonderful lovely boy. Never bit, never gave me any issues about going back in the cage. He was a BIG boy too, the largest budgie I've ever know.

I miss him so much. We came home to him laying on the bottom of the cage :( No idea what happened to this day. But now that I am much better informed, I am sure that something we did made him sick. I still feel guilty about it to this day :(

He is next to Zelda and Pippin here. My beautiful girl would do conure somersaults on top of the cage when she wanted to go it XD and Pippin was very calm and quiet.

I used to have a flock of fancy pigeons, had birds shipped from all over the country. I think the post office box for birds was more then the shipping.

I had both, and I have to admit there's just something about EB's that makes them super special to me. They're laid back, smart, and just fluffy and loveable :)
