Pepsi and sprite, both are American male budgies
Ever since Sprites buddie , Pepsi passed away he's been a little quieter than usual. They grew up together and I my heart aches whenever I see him fiddling with a toy alone on the perch they use to share. I really want him to have a little buddy to play with him as I'll be starting highschool next week. The breeder I want to contact has every species imaginable and I was just wondering if a different species could be with him . Not a finch or canary , but rather a Linnie or a Cockatiel. Possible? I know it depends on the disposition but perhaps just a generalization?
The cage Sprite is in right now is big enough for him, but I would upgrade to a even bigger one.

Well, from what I've heard about Linnie's, they have a different kind of personality and temperament from a budgie, so although they're not too different in size, it's not recommended that they share a cage.

I've heard of cockatiels and budgies getting along, but it really depends on the individuals. Also, if the budgie is established already in the cage, he can be territorial and aggressive to any newcomer. Best to separately cage when you get your new bird. If after quarantine you want to see if they show interest in each other or get an idea whether they'll get along, place the cages side by side and supervise interactions.

I really think that because of the tiny size and feisty temperament of American budgies, the best and safest friend for them is really another budgie.

Agreed, it's just too dangerous because even if they are friendly to each other different species can hurt each other without even trying! It is soooooooo cute seeing different birds playing together and even budgies hanging out on a golden retrievers head on videos online - but its wayyy too risky!

If they are going to share a cage please get the same species.

I have parakeets and cockatiels. They do generally get along. They play together and preening each other.

At bedtime they go to their own cages.

They do try to sleep in the same cage. I don't allow it.

The tiels are a bit territorial and if the keets go in their chosen sleep spot tthey fight. One night I didn't separate them soon enough and they fought.
One of my keets got a horribly cracked beak this way.

He's fine now but I'd never risk it again
