Hey PG, the talking softly and letting him out of the cage are fine, the use of a net to catch him and put him back in the cage will never gain you the birds trust, if you can't handle the bird by hand, then you should try to perch train your IRN, when he flies off the cage, you can retrieve him with the perch and return him to the top of the cage instead of putting him in it, placing him back in the cage may become a negitive imprint with the bird thinking that everytime he comes out and flies you place him back inside, he may then refuse to come out altogether, it may take hundreds of times of retrieving him and placing him back on top of the cage before he realizes hes not supposed to fly off the cage, wing clipping may also help, but thats a decision that will have to be up to you.......

The net isn't *too* bad as a last resort .... but it might be as anything other than a last resort.

As Bobby said, work on perch training him as the first (and most important) step.

But also keep in mind that you should go step by step rewarding along the way.

Get him to step up, give him a great treat and calm praise, then let him go right back to what he was doing or where he was. If he steps up, gets a treat, then is locked up in the cage right away it's not really a reward, instead he'd feel like he was punished for stepping up on the perch.

Repeat the reward-release routine several times, THEN put him in the cage ... reward him, then let him right out of the cage again. Similarly, repeat this several times before you have to close him in the cage for any period of time.

This way he will learn that MOST of the time when he steps up or goes in the cage he gets a reward and loses nothing - only on a few unpredictable occasions will he get a reward but get 'trapped' in his cage.
