I have been wanting a second bird but i didnt think i would get one this soon! I was stuck trying to decide between a few species and local options, but I kept coming back to cockatiels. They were on my short list before I got Pumpkin. So today my fiance found a baby at petco when he went to get Pumpkin's pellets. He got me a beautiful lutino cockateil! I would rather have gone to a breeder or rescue, but thats okay. He/she is about 2 or three months old. We dont know what gender, apparently the lutinos are more difficult to tell...? Either way I already ordered a feather DNA sexing kit from avian biotech.

Anyway I am thinking of naming it Popcorn because he is mostly white with yellow everywhere. Any other name ideas? Pumpkin and Popcorn....I think I like it.

Pictures coming soon! :yellow1:

Not great pictures, but I don't want to stress him out. I'm trying to leave him alone as much as possible. Poor thing he's so scared. I placed him on that perch a few hours ago and he has not moved a muscle.

Congratulations Ann :). I love the name Popcorn for a lutino tiel. That's perfect! A very pretty bird. I'm not sure, are ones with that much yellow still lutino, or a different mutation I wonder. Looking forward to updates once he or she is settled.

I think lutino is for any solid white to solid yellow and anywhere between. But if anyone knows better I'd be happy to know. :)

Yes I really like the name Popcorn, the longer I think about it the more I like it.

He still hasn't moved from that position. Poor scared baby. I hope he begins to relax soon. He's probably hungry and thirsty. Maybe tomorrow.

Considering the coloration's that I'm seeing, lutino pearl (pied?), I'm going to guess that Popcorn is a female! :)

Monica, where did you find this information? I'd love to know! Thanks for your input. I was hoping for a boy, but because no one in my area DNAs their babies so I gave up on a boy and started looking at color. Haha.

Lutino and pearl are both sex-linked mutations. Pied is recessive. I'm pretty sure I can see pearls, but I'm not 100% on the pied mutation though.... Anyway.... Some examples....

I used Gencalc so I wouldn't have to type this all out, and I removed the splits in the offspring so it doesn't look as messy...

Male ino pearl x Female grey
% from all Male
100.0% grey

% from all Female
100.0% pearl ino

Male grey split ino-pearl x Female grey
% from all Male
100.0% grey

% from all Female
35.0% pearl ino
15.0% ino
35.0% grey
15.0% pearl

Male grey x Female ino pearl
% from all Male
100.0% grey

% from all Female
100.0% grey

Male ino pearl x Female ino pearl
% from all Male
100.0% pearl ino

% from all Female
100.0% pearl ino

Male grey split ino-pearl x Female ino pearl
% from all Male
15.0% ino
35.0% grey
15.0% pearl
35.0% pearl ino

% from all Female
35.0% grey
15.0% ino
35.0% pearl ino
15.0% pearl

In short though, it is easier to get visual female offspring than it is to get visual male offspring of any sex-linked mutation. If you want visual females, only the male needs to carry the mutation in order to pass it down to his offspring. If you want visual males, then both parents *must* carry the mutation - females will be visual, males can be visual or split!

The reason being that females are *always* visual is because they cannot be split to a sex-linked mutation. Female parrots are "X,Y" (really, Z,W), so they do not have the extra genes to hide a sex-linked mutation.

This is one of the most simplified genetic explanations I've come across. :)

Beginner Guide to Genes, Mutations and Hybrids

If you could get Popcorn (kind of digging the name! But more so because I've found that new cockatiels tend to have a somewhat buttery popcorn smell to them! After they've been in the home for a while, it seems as if the smell wears off and then it's rarely smelt again...) under a black light, I might be able to tell more. I would need photos of the tail feathers and flights spread for a possibly better idea of mutations.

Thanks Monica! That actually makes sense to me - for the most part - because i studied genes and punnet squares in college. Birds seem to be the opposite from mamals though so it is difficult. I have been looking into Lutinos, and apparently whoever supplies petco birds needs a lesson or two on breeding because my Popcorn has a huge bald spot behind the crest, which is normal but you can breed in a way that reduces that. Anyway, this is really interesting i love learning about stuff like this. Thanks for the information!

Day 2 and she's already using her hammock! This was Pumpkins spare that I washed and gave to Popcorn, it looks like I need to cut off that frayed edge. But I can't believe how quickly she learned what that hammock is for. Haha becoming spoiled already...

I'm also seeing lutino pearl (Julie, that's why there is so much yellow) and perhaps pied as well. However if the bird is as young as you say, it could have pearls and be either gender because young male pearls have their pearls. Some pearl pieds also keep their pearls even if they are male. I know you can visually sex lutino pearls... I just don't know how! Lol.

As to the bald spot, I would bet you are right and the breeder doesn't know what they are doing. That is a clear indicator of too much lutino in the bloodline, likely the breeder bred visual lutino of to visual lutino, which commonly results in bald babies.

Oh, and there are both yellow and white birds that are not lutino, the word lutino refers to the actual gene, not necessarily the color and there are other gene combos that can give the appearance.

Thanks for all that info! I wish there was a way to tell the age more accuratly. All petco could tell us was that she was "young".

Parrots, and reptiles, are opposite to humans! :) I do find it interesting that birds and reptiles have the same chromosomes, but then again, birds *ARE* descended from dinosaurs! :D I think it also explains why their feet have a scaley like appearance!

Casey, my first tiel, loves to "snuggle" with things as well! She used to be cage buddies to my cherry headed conure (RIP) and they two could often be found snuggled together at night. :)

And I have a picture of Casey snuggling up to a small piece of log/wood!

PS, I don't recommend housing cockatiels and conures together! In fact, I had no intentions of keeping Casey, the tiel, with Noel, the conure! But Casey was adamant , and Noel decided she wasn't half bad, either! ;) In fact, Casey enjoyed preening Noel's head, but Noel never returned the favor! :D
