Content budgie?

So I've had Toby for 3 weeks and few days...he likes to sit on my hand, he still seems a little scared initially when he gets taken out of the cage (he does fly out by himself). He is still getting adjusted I'm sure, but will react to my voice and will look excited when I get home from work. I'm sure it will take more than few weeks to gain his full trust. I'm a little worried as to he sits very quietly, he doesn't really make too much noise. He does get loud when I vacuum, almost as if he is trying to be louder than the vacuum. He also starts chirping when the water is on in the sink. Is this normal? Is he still getting adjusted? Thank you all!

First I have to say Toby is a little doll . I think budgies are just so cute. I think he might just be a little quieter than usual since 3 weeks is not a long time, and he is still adjusting to the new place.

After my budgie Pix passed away (and before I got Mink), I put Twigs in the room with the parrots, and he was allowed free flight in there (until the parrots let me know that he could no longer be safe with them). Anyway, Twigs loved it with the parrots and was happy, so he was very noisy. When I transfered him to a larger flight cage in a different area of the house for his safety, Twigs was very quiet for the first month or so. The new surroundings as well as the new cage was a big adjustment for him. As you mentioned also, when there is more noise going on in the house, birds tend to make more noise themselves.

Make sure Toby has enough toys to play with while you're gone, since he's an only bird. My budgies love shreddable toys, toys with bells, and swings.

How adorable! I think he's quite because he's probably lonely when he is without you. We have a lot of budgies and I have learned a lot from having them. I think he would do well with a mate to keep company with. Budgies are naturally very social and very active. If you get him a buddy, his buddy will learn that you are a friend too (based off observing your original Budgie who is already bonded to you). We did this with our very first budgies. With most of our busy working schedules, it would be good for him to have a friend during work hours. Precious baby!

I don't think he is quiet because he is lonely. If he's lonely he'll be trying to call a mate. I do think though, that he would benefit from a budgie friend while you are away. Budgies in particular have a strong desire to be with others. But unless Toby is very bonded to you already, and has that relationship established before introducing him to another bird, there is a chance you will lose his friendship to the other bird.
