Hi all, Been a while since being on here. As you know I had a bad car accident after coming back from spending time in South America.
Hip surgery, then a back surgery just recently left me in a state hard to get around for a while.
Anyway, this past Friday my grey decided to visit Twinkie's cage...which he rarely if at all, ever does. My BFA was on her per nearby, when I heard " GREYSON....No no nooo noooo nnooooooo" from poppie ( The BFA) and looked Greyson was on Twinkies cage.
I didn't notice anything unusual at first with Twinkie, put Greyson in his cage. I went to check on Twinkie, and a white Budgie was suddenly blood covered. Her front toe (finger) was completely clipped off. right at the base.
The fear and heart just about does you in. I took her out yelled for my wife to grab the first aid kit (we have aside for the birds) and called the vet as it was close to closing time for vet's office. The vet already left but receptionist was calling him back in.
I dipped twinkie's foot in luke warm water with a pinch of peroxide.
Put antibiotics on it, wrapped it up in low grade surgical tape which isn't real sticky, just right. T.he bleeding stopped
The vet said it was a clean , even cut, or should I say amputation. The vet said I did all that could be done as a Budgie is mainly bone and skin on the toe/finger and there was no bleeding anymore. So he applied more antibiotics, wrapped her up and we went home. The next day I applied ( Liquid skin) which is hard to find, but is used like a band aid but in liquid form and is not toxic.
It sealed her wound and she is actually acting like her self today...but poor thing needs help to her dish and that which I do, and have a little tiny blanket which she cuddles up under my chin and rests her head on my thumb.
She's now my special needs bird, but so ever lovely and a tough cookie.
She'll be fine, but will have to improvise.
