Bananas - Cockatiel; 1.5yo F
Unnamed - Parakeet; ? ?
Hello all, I haven't been here in forever and forgot my old username and email so I made a new account, but I have s lovely cockatiel named Bananas. :)
And now I have a parakeet! Dunno if boy or girl. No name yet (ideas anyone?)

I have two questions.
1) I was thinking of getting the new bird a friend (another parakeet from the same place I bought him/her, they all lived together) to help it transition. This bird has never been in a real home environment before and it seems very freaked out, and I feel a familiar face will put it at ease.
(My cockatiel was a regime, so while she had to adjust to me and my house she was more relaxed.)

2) When I finally introduce the new bird to Bananas (quarantined right now) I know I should start with moving their cages into the same room, but what after that? Just open both cages and let them figure it out as I supervise? Or let one bird out and let the other watch from inside their cage (like let Bananas out and let new bird watch me play with her?)

Thanks all.

Hi! Welcome back to the forum!!
I just got a new budgie, too. It's really stressful for them to move, so give him some time to adjust. As for a name, if your new budgie is going to be housed with Bananas, consider a name like... Mangos, or something else depending on the coloring.
I don't know that another budgie would help the transition, but it will help if your new bird is lonely.
When you introduce the two birds, do it in neutral territory. Have them in, say, a play gym, and supervise carefully. Also, give them time to just see each other in their own cages first, so they are comfortable with each other's presence. It's likely that if you step up Bananas or show the bird that you two are bonded, the bird will mimic your relationship, at least that's what happened for my two birds I had before.

Thanks! Right now I'm mostly leaving him alone, I'll just sit by his cage and read or talk to him or something. After about a week I'm going to see if s/he'll be receptive to taking mullet from my hands and go from there.
S/he (blah, I'll just call it a he until I know for sure, lol) does seem likely. Previously he was housed with lots of other parakeets and he just sits in one spot for hours on end.

After the quarantine period I was planning on moving his cage into the same room as Bananas, then let them see each other from their cage for a few days (or longer if needed) before letting them out together.

He's mostly white with blue, I'll see if I can get a picture up.

That's it! I think I remember the password, I'll try logging in and see if I do. If so I'll continue on that account and post on here under it.

Welcome back to the forums! Honestly mine didn't have to be technically quarantined since they were from the same place, I just put them in together and they did great! They are getting along quite well. Sometimes they get fiesty mainly the girls, I just fix that by saying no and sticking my hand near the cage and they go back to chattering. Really it's up to you whether you quarantine or not, most say you should for 45 days, but if my bird is from the same flock I don't quarantine.

If you could provide pics I may be able to sex your bird(s).

Thanks everyone!

The parakeets are from the same flock and are in together, but they're separated from my cockatiel for now.
I'll try adding some photos.

Eta: Not sure if you can see in the photos, but the blue one *seems* to have a bulgier/more round cere and the green one has a flatter cere. Then again I'm not experienced with budgies, could just be how they had their feathers fluffed or something.
