Hello this is my first post on this forum.

I need help with taming my birds.

Ive got 3 birds, Cockatiel, budgie and rosella. I got them back in 2011.
The problem is, now is 2016 and i havent made any contact with them, they are wild, i just refill them water and food every day thats it.

I wanna tame them but i dont know how, i need help with that. Otherwise im gonna set them free.

Also, dont reccomend me any books for taming birds or something like that... I dont have time for books. (U probably wonder "he wanna tame his birds but dont have time to read a book, how come he got time for birds?") welll i dont give a s#it about stupid books.

Please don't set them free. Rehome them to someone before you set them free.
Where about's are their cages? How did you get them? Are they hand reared?

Step one: Have them in a place where they can watch you to their hearts content and learn to trust you. Have you done that yet?

Thanks for the quick reply,

1. I have 2 cages, both are big enough for them. Cages are almost always open.
2. I bought them in a pet shop store (i know its a bad thing but at that time i didnt know much about parrots).
3.They are not hand reared.

They cant watch me, i cant place their cages in my room because they make so much mess, also when i try to touch them they are so stressed that they poop.

After 1hr getting closer to budgie he gets used to my finger/hand. But after 15 mins of me being away he forgets who i am and gets scared again.

Well, my goodness! It's always a pleasure to meet a brand new member, especially when they threaten to set birds free in their very first post!

I beg you, please do not set these birds free, their chances of surviving are nonexistent.

I won't bother to ask if books are all you could care less about, I won't ask what you are doing with three birds you've had no interest in for the past several years. I will strongly suggest you take the time to find an appropriate home for the birds.

You don't start off asking for advise by pissing people off. Saying you will set them free was just asking for people to hate you. If you take that attitude with training you will not go far.

Sit next to their cages for 1 hr every day, all the while feeding them their favorite treats. Talk to them. Do this for 3 weeks, EVERY day, same time every day. I will bet you 10 bucks they will like you much more and it will be time to move to the next step. Come on, you can do it!!

Journeyman, I have a nagging suspicion you are trolling for controversy, in case you genuinely want to improve the lives of the birds already in your care you will need to put forth more effort than you have before now. Based on what you've said, my advice is to find someone willing to give the birds a better life.

When dealing with animals, anger will get you nowhere. If you really want to keep the birds and bond with them, try a more positive approach and for good measure add a bit of compassion for three creatures that have no choice but to depend on you for their very lives.

Here's a link with helpful tips on bonding.

I hope you're not just trolling here, in case you are, you won't get far ;). BUT, if you are honestly asking for advice I'll try to help here :).

First of all, parent raised birds are so much harder to tame than a well socialized handfed bird. Birds in general as natural prey animals aren't as trusting as domesticated pet mammals, so there is that factor also. HOW tame you are expecting is another thing. I don't think that you should expect from those particular species being parent raised, any level of cuddliness. However, with CONSISTENT work at building trust with your birds you will in time have trusting companions who might at least be comfortable to sit with you and come to you willingly, even if they might not be touchable. Maybe this will take more time than you're willing to put in? It "can" in some cases take many months to years. Maybe less depending on the individuals and how comfortable you and the environment make them feel. Are you giving off more of an aggressive manly man vibe to them? Really I'm being serious.. Birds tend to respond more positively to calm, gentle, non-confrontational behavior from predatory species (such as humans). I know for myself I tend to get high strung, but around the birds I try to be slower and calm myself. They're good at picking up vibes. Good luck!

Birds are a lot of work. A lot more work than reading a stupid book. Although you say your cages are large enough, if your birds have not left the cages in five years, I am quite certain that the cages are not large enough for this lifestyle.

When you surrender your birds, come back onto this forum. There are many people who take in rescues. Alternatively, there are likely bird rescues in your area.

I have 3 keets and 3 tiels. I ve had them for over a year and I work with them every day. They arent very touchable but they will all perch on me, preen my hair and eat out of my hand.

Actually one tiel is a baby ive had from hatching, parent raised but handled daily from 2 weeks. When it fledged it became untouchable. Its starting to warm up to me again.

If you are serious about these birds please work on getting yourself to the right place before you start. Birds are highly intelligent and can tell your mood before you even realise what it is.

Anger and frustration = bites!

O god im not trolling. My birds are free inside house, cages are almost always open, they get in/out whenever they want.
I cant afford to be 24/7 in front of their cages cuz i got school work to do and parrots arent my #1 priority in life.
Im not showing them aggressive manly man vibe, im calm when im around them.
Right after this post im gonna try to make some progress with them.
Maybe my posts looks like trolling because my english isnt good? im from Eu

OK, you do not need to be around them 24/7 just make the time you are with them count, positive!

Do the reading supplied here and work slow. Talk to them nice, offer a treat, get them to trust you. It will take a fair while after leaving them to their own devices for some years.

I'm brand new to parrots and can't offer advice on actual taming, but I can tell you I've been reading everything I can find about them. Seems like everything I've come across indicates that time spent with these birds is very important, and that even being within sight makes a real difference. I'd definitely try to get set up so that the cages are in your usual space at home. That may mean doing school work in the living room instead of the bedroom or whatever your situation may be.

It does sound like you care enough to put in some effort to accommodate your birds, which sounds great to me. There are plenty of people successfully keeping birds while working full time, so don't feel pressured into thinking they need to have you on top of them 24/7 to make a difference.

Spent 2hrs with them today. 0% success with rosella, she is wild, doesnt bite but just run away. Budgie is friendly, i made a little progress with him yay. Cockatiel is same as rosella.
Didnt talk to them tho.
Do i really need to talk to them?

I'd definitely try to get set up so that the cages are in your usual space at home.
Cant place them anywhere else but on hallway.

Yes talk to them. Talk to yourself. Talk calmly and quietly.
Turn a radio on and jam out. Watch tv with them.
Involve them in LIFE. They're flock birds. They want to be part of your flock.
