Well as you folks all know Julie's Chip is the cause of my most recent case of Budgieitis...I have had bouts of it before but none as bad as this, however it keeps coming back and they tell me its incurable and gets even worse every time you coo over a pretty Budgie or feel its soft fluffy feathers close to your face or snuggle its little head into your fingers for a scritch ...well nothing I could do about it except order a baby budgie and wait until its ready to come home...about 5 to 6 weeks from now the breeder said (and I cant wait) so some Budgie cage shopping will be on the cards and a massive splurge on Budgie toys and I was planning I would start my shopping spree mid July or so and keep adding to the cage from then until baby arrives...well, the best thought plans do have a way of coming undone and it seems I will have to start ordering things like right now this week instead of waiting. A few hours ago I had a phone call from a friend who was in our local pet shop getting treats for her dogs and as she passed by the budgie cage she noticed that one of the budgies had bits of toes missing so she rang me to ask what she should do. Shes not a Budgie person and as the other Budgies were picking on this little one she felt it should be taken out of there and wanted to know if I would consider giving it a home. As I know of old at that pet store they tend to euthanaise the smaller birds that have anything wrong with them most especially if the other birds are picking on them because of their disability I asked her to purchase the little one and drop it in to me on her way home...I also asked her to tell them it was for me and see if they would knock anything off the price which they did. Budgie arrived about an hour ago and its a girl and she has no name yet...luckily she took to me steaight off and while I set up an emergency temporary cage for her she played in my hair and flew the length and breath of the bathroom squawking for all she was worth which started Peter Pan and Mr Biggles off too wondering what or who had invaded the house when they heard her LoL :) She is now eating seed in a makeshift old cage which will be her home until I order a new cage for her ...the amputated bits of toes dont seem to bother her too much and are old injuries that appear to have healed well. Although she is fairly wild at the moment she did perch on my finger for long enough to get a pic and she played in my hair for a bit while I got her cage sorted so Im guessing she is just frightened by all that has recently happened to her like ending uo in the petshop with some females who my friend said did not like her and were picking on her, then she got grabbed and brought here where a crazy woman wantrd to take pics of her and her toes and didnt even have a propper cage ready for her to move into so no wonder this little lady is a bit skittish and goes into fly away mode at every given oppertunity . I am leaving her now to munch on some fruit and veg which as yet she has not touched and to gobble up her budgie food which she is used to...I got what they fed her at the pet store we shall try some pellets as soon as I order them in Budgie size, meanwhile I have broken a small few of Mr Biggles and Peter Pans pellets and added them into her Budgie food...she seems happy enough...you shall all have to wait until the pics upload but as you now all see my Budgieitis has indeed taken me over...Be careful guys as you read this thread for you could all catch it too, Im warning you; Budgieitis is extremely contageous :)

Awww, I believe this is what was meant to happen. I am so glad your friend called you and brought her home to you. She is going to have such a wonderful life now!

I want to see her, I can't wait until you get the pic uploaded:)
Are you still getting the baby budgie as well?

So sweet! I have a long standing case of budgieitis. You can't get over it, but I live in a place where budgies are not plentiful...problem solved symptoms remain! So I live vicariously through all of you! Go budgies!

Thanks Terry :) hee hee maybe I should be cancelling the baby but the trouble is that the Budgieitis icapacitates me every time I think of calling the breeder to cancel, so it doesnt look like I will be canceling the baby...I even have a few thoughts about the babys name but none of those names seem to fit this girl. Shes not a baby and the only history I have on her is that she came from an aviary so Im guessing she was once a pet that ended up in an aviary and maybe was not wild enough to be accepted by the other budgies and lost a couple of her toes in the skirmishes and ended up in the petstore with a group of Budgies that came in yesterday and as they were imported from the UK via a dealer there is no way of knowing anything about her history. Shes not ringed so I dont even know her age but shes not a juvenile either.
Pics are almost eeady :)

Hee hee I sympathise with your Budgieitis but I wouldnt be too sure about one of the little Love Bugs not making its way yo you. Budgies have been known to show up in the most unusual and unexpected of places especially when they spot a Budgieitos sufferer :)

She is a very pretty girl and seems a whole lot more relaxed here than my friend was telling me she was in the store...she must have been pretty scared poor thing...in a way its like she was always here...didnt want to go into the cage and walked up my arm a couple of times to get back out and up on my shoulder. I wont disturb her again now until morning except to cover her for the night and tuck her in but I will leave her in the cage tonight without handling her...tomorrow we can start the handling hand taming and some step up games which aught to help with the bonding...I really dont know whether she and the new baby will get on or not we shall have to wait and see...either way I plan to cage them seperately but side by side just in case anything should cause a little war between them and more toes go missing...Budgies usually get on well together except perhaps the females may fight over nesting sites and males when it comes to breeding season but as even the juvenile and baby budgies were picking on this girl in the pet shop perhaps she doesnt have what it takes to be a flock bird within a flock and might get on better being a flock bird with her own cage space in my flock especially now that Peter Pan and Mr Biggles have both started speaking a little Budgie Hee hee :) I think I now have 3 budgies a big WFA sized one a blue middle sized one and teeny tiny little Lutino one all blabbering away in Budgie linguo through the doors to each other :)

Beautiful baby, the missing toe/toenails should not hinder anything. My Nigel's missing a toenail and part of his toe. I think it makes him tough looking (just born without it really but it looks like a brave injury).

Go budgies!

Probably a good idea to cage them separately with her poor little missing toes. It sounds to me like she knows she is home, safe and loved now.
I have always had trouble with my female budgies being the bullies. I was thrilled when my friend got a mean male into her rescue, I knew that may give him a chance against her if they were ever allowed to be together..lol.
They started out in a divided cage, but then started feeding each other through the bars so we opened the cage up and they fell in love with each other:)

That is too cute that PeterPan and Mr. Biggles are imitating her already! Who knew they would be bilingual?

Thank you LeaKP. Nigel is Adorable...yes she is missing part of two toes but they dont seem to be bothering her at all...just like Nigel its just part of a toe on each foot thats missing and the nail is missing on each of the two toes affected too but she doesnt seem to notice. Shes pretty agile. I didnt notice until you said thst Nigel was mussingbpart of his toe...it makes them unique doesnt it :)

Thats lovely how your pair fell in love I guess the lady wanted a Guy who was strong enough to wrestle with her LoL:) Yes I think it might be safer give each of them their own cage just in case because I dont want her losing any more toes...Ive had pairs of Budgie before and they got on fine but because of her disability Im not willing to take the risk. When you pair budgies it is usual to place them in a new cage together with the male being the first to enter it so that they dont argue...well its the hen mainly that does the argueing and you have to watch them to be sure they get along and be ready to seperate any argueing pairs if they dont get along. If you add a male into a lone females territory you can have problems because the female is territorial and she is the one who does the fighting. Budgie males are usually laid back gentle boys who dont fight with each other. Your find of a mean male Budgie was indeed a very rare find. Do you still have them Terry ?

I don't mean to butt in here, please excuse. I can't believe I missed this sweet sweet thread. So sorry to hear you have budgieitis but ohmigoodness what a darling little Love Bug you have there! Isn't she beautiful, and the little patch of white feathers on her cheek. I do love the budgies, I have two tiny white females that share a cage, they share everything really, if one moves more than a few inches away, the other panics. My little Piper is missing the tip of a toe and a nail, her foot looks a lot like Love Bug's. Her injury is also long healed and it doesn't seem to slow her down at all.

Have you officially named your little buttercup yet? Love Bug is awfully cute!

You can't turn away your ordered baby. You will love having them both and as far as I know, that's the only possible way to alleviate budgieitis symptoms, that's what I've heard anyway.

OMG!! I knew it I knew it I knew it!!!! I just absolutley knew this was coming Mary hehee :D. Congratulations... I see that the Budgieitis disease has reached the point of permanent infection :).

A lutino! What a gorgeous shade of yellow :). I'm glad that she can use her feet well, and they aren't affecting her. Poor thing, I'm so glad your friend had rescued her for you. Now she will have a life she truly deserves. She must have been a tame pet once, as is obvious she isn't a completely wild budgie.

Any names coming to mind yet? I'm glad you are practicing quarantine, especially not knowing her history :).

I can't wait to hear about a baby too, upcoming!! :D. Ps... since it sounds like you might have a particularly virulent strain of the Budgieitis disease, you must do all you can to keep from eventually having an entire aviary full :18:.

Ha ha Thank you Allee ...you are lucky your two girls get on well as sometimes girl Budgies dont...so nice for them that they have each other they must have been together since they were babies...no little Love Bug doesnt have a name yet but I kinda like Buttercup now you have mentioned it I might see how that fits tomorrow when she wakens...I also have one or two other names to try on her...shes in bed now for the night...all the fids are tucked up for the night and sound asleep...the baby I am about to get will likely be white that is if the parenrs actually hatch the eggs this time as the Breeder told me that last time they were inexperienced parents and deserted the eggs ... so you think that the baby will cure my Budgieitis eh ?? :) :) hee hee you may be right :) :)

Somehow I knew you were going to enjoy this thread Julie LoL :) The Handsome Chip now has a new online GF :) Lets hope the permenant infection has peaked at two little feathered Budgie growths and that no further infection will occur :) She wasnt there when I was in the pet shop on Thursday...in fact she has only been there since yesterday evening so Im guessing that both she and I are lucky she wasnt there for longer and be more traumatised by the agro in the packed cage...the others probably sensed her disability or perhaps she was a hand raised and didnt know how to relate to other budgies and that nade them pick on her...I really dint know but she is pretty tame and immediately took to me(i was the first person to handle her rather than grab her and she responded) She does Chips trick of walking up my arm when I try and put her back into her cage ;)
As to names...Allee mentioned Buttercup and I like that also I was thinking Goldielocks, Babe, Custi (my friends Budgie who is yellow and green and black mainly is called Custi so perhaps not a good idea to repeat the name as we would get confused as to who was who )
Im looking forward to seeing what shes like tomorrow.Im hoping also that my Av will be able to see her tomorrow...usually he fits me in as soon as I ask hes pretty good that way...I hope hes not on holidays as Id rather see him than his replacement. I shall know first thing in the morning .
