Water bottle

Hi! I have a 2 month old parakeet who has splayed legs. I'm going to be taking him to the vet as soon as it warms up(I take public transportation). They said it will just take longer to heal. In the meantime, he's doing just fine flying, landing, and eating, but I worry about his water intake. I give him water in a little tiny condiment cup several times a day, but would like to find a dish/bottle that would be easy for him to drink from. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Stay away from bottles, since may Parrots need to be taught how to use them.

There are tons of dishes /bowls available from any number of on-line Pet Supply sites and sites that sell cages with cage supplies. Also, every big box Pet Stores and local Pet Store. Whether you want to hang it from the bars of the cage or setting them on the top of the cage is your choice. In addition, you can choose between metal, plastic or ceramic, once again your choice.

I would recommend a heavy, wide, shallow ceramic dish so that he can easily get to the water but isn't in danger of drowning. I would set it on the floor.

Splayed legs can only be corrected while a bird is very young, so please take him to the vet ASAP. There may even be a mobile vet in your area who can come to you.

As already stated you can't cure splayed legs after the bird has grown, so you cannot wait until it is warmer, he needs to go to an avian vet immediately or he will be like that for the rest of his life. (I bred English budgies for 16 years, just so you realize I know what I'm talking about and have dealt with this issue myself) I don't know who told you it would "just take longer to heal" but it doesn't work like that, once a bird's legs grow fully they will be stuck in that "splayed" position forever.

The treatment for splayed legs is quite easy and I suggest you do it right now yourself if you don't plan on taking him to an avian vet immediately. You need to make him a solid splint that both his legs fit into and that keeps his legs straight. If you Google "Parakeet Splayed Leg Splint" you will get detailed directions on how to make one at home, and you need to keep him wearing it all the time starting right now and on at least for 6 months+. This is an easy problem to fix and it would be sad if your bird was permanently crippled for no reason other than you waited too long to get him help. 2 months is really already too old to start treating splayed legs, but it's better than waiting a day longer...

As stated you want a drinking dish that is wide and very shallow at the bottom of his cage so he can't fall over into it and drown, which is common with splayed legged birds. It will be a bit harder for him to get around once you put the splint on his legs, so the wider dish at the bottom of his cage will help his mobility problem as well.

Please do not wait another day to get your poor budgie help for his legs, he should have gotten it from birth, or at least the moment his splayed legs were visible...it really is an easy problem to fix, but you only have a very small window of time to fix it, and yours is almost up.
