In order for the forum members to help you we need some more details. First of all please tell us your experience with captive birds and where you live? Can you get this bird to an avain vet?
Do you have the bird in a large or small cage? Is the bird eating and drinking? Did you see the place where this bird came from to give us any more ideas of what it has been through. Can you send us a photo of this bird please. Sorry to ask so much but we do need to know a little more.

sorry im just findin my way around this site so not sure how to post pic onto thread but there is one or 2 on my profile page

ive not really had much experience with birds at all tbh n live in a small town... the cage she is in seems abit small to me so on pay day im goin shoppin for a newer bigger one... yes shes eating n drinkin n seems quite happy when left alone... she sits in cage very quiet though

all i know of her history is my friend sent her to live with one of his best friends who then got cancer n subequently died.. her husband didnt give baby any attention due to lookin after babys owner n once the woman died all contact with the birds stopped... just stoppin by n puttin food in cage... the cage was in an awful state wen i got her last night n took me ages to clean n sort out.. she had no toys or anythin so went out this morning n bought some to tide her over till i can get her a new cage..

hope this helps

Thanks for info. It will help us help you. If vet is a avian spe******t he or she should be a big help.definitely talk about proper nutrition. The book Parrots for Dummies is an excellent resource for folks brand new to "parronting" and many of us found it helpful
As to taming your frightened fid (feathered kid) this will take time and patience and we will gladly advise you. For now just concentrate on giving her a safe, clean cage, healthy food and getting her health checked out. Then you can begin to get to know each other slowly.

thanks for that... first thing i did was clean tht nasty cage out was atrocious... bless her shes really lovely. my usual vet put me onto this one where im takin her but ill reserve judgment till ive been first... least she is eatin n lovin the treats i give her... as long as i dnt go near cage too closely shes fine n seems happy lol...i thought best thing at mo is to just leave her n let her get used to her new surroundings.. talkin to her everytime i pass n shoutin to her from across the room..that way she doesnt feel threatened or react badly.
ill deffo look into gettin tht book...:) i have been doin alot of reading on net too n found some really useful info on there n seems tht so far im doin things right by her :)

Youre doing fine. Put a chair as close as she can tolerate without significant distress and then use it to read, study, knit, play solitaire ...whatever. so she learns your presence is not to be feared. Let us know how vet visit goes. How are you getting her there. Does cage fit in car?

When I first got my baby, she too would run away at the mere sight of a hand. I couldn't touch her, clean her cage or switch out water/food bowls without her cowering at the backmost corner of her cage. It took ten days for her to take a treat through the bars (very hesitantly, but she took it) but now, three weeks later, she steps up like a little champ and if she's still a tad nervous of hands, well, I can wait another new weeks/months. ;)

All I did those first two weeks was sit/lay by her cage, reading books and talking to her. That's it. Get her used to my voice, presence etc as well as her new home. Once she took the food through the bars (and eventually from perched open atop her cage) we decided to try more hands-on: wrapping her as gently as we could in a towel we gave her preens and skritches (which she enjoyed, she has/had a lot of pinfeathers behind her neck she couldn't reach) and got her used to being touched - that hands wouldn't necessarily kill her.

This isn't a rigid timeline, and I have a long way to still go, but I'm lucky with my baby. She only bites when she's scared, otherwise she'd prefer to run away. There's a little lover in there though - I finally got a small taste of it yesterday and can't wait until I see it more often.

Just let your bird know you love it and are patient to wait for it to trust you. Once you get there, seriously, it gets real awesome real fast. Just remember you have a lifetime with the bird so create the best first-impression you can. ;)

thanks for that hunni i do appreciate it :)... shes pretty good already if u put treats in the bars she will take em but thts as brave as she gets at mo which in 48 hrs i think is remarkable n so much more than i expected her to be like
u know when ur outside her comfort zone cos she leans forwrds n hisses at ya as if to say no thts too close so we back off till she is happy... her cage is right nxt to sofa where i sit n she does move around the cage as long as house is perfectly quiet

its just heartbreaking to see such a beautiful bird so sad n scared

Your doing fantastically ! For someone with little bird knowledge your perfectly on track
glad to hear the vet visit went well
did she do a wing clip also as this will help when the time comes to leave the cage door open etc before handling

I'm so thrilled this bird has found a good , safe home filled with love and I'm sure before long she will come to love you for it

So, how is she doing? Starting to settle in a bit? I remember the transition for my GCC from taking treats through the bars to letting us handle her was so quick compared to the weeks spent getting her used to us. ;)

shes not doing so bad i think.. she is exploring her cage more as opposed to just sitting on one perch. she is chewing at her toy now and sometimes in evenings when all is quiet i hear little chirps coming from her... shes putting on weight and looking a lot better and doesn't create a fuss when i do her shower spray in a morning anymore.... maybe i'm getting somewhere?.. i'm not going to push her though as she still gets really nasty if get to close to her..

Glad to hear that the bird has gained weight, great sign. Sure sounds like she it settling in and getting used to things now. You are a great guardian, giving her space, to do things on her own term, when she is ready.
Keep up the great work ;)

thank you. i know it is going to be a long road and im willing to wait till she is ready at least she seems to like her new cage :) i think getting the budgie as helped somewhat since she was used to being in a house with several other birds so i cannot take all the credit as some goes to sunny too bless him.
