Riley-white faced grey cockatiel (hatch date 6-28-2014) RIP Halloween-pied cockatiel
So today I was REALLY wanting to hold a ferret to get my ferret fix as we call it well they were sleep so I let them sleep and because they remodeld petco I looked around and I saw these two little cockatiels a pied and a lutino in two cages stacked on top of each other and I asked how much one was because all it said was 70% off so they told me its about $20 bucks and so my mom looked at me and told me no because I was not going to keep it at her place and my dad told me no more pets so then on our way to costco she was like ok you can ask Robin and if she says yes then you can get one and only one so I said ok but you can't tell her to say no when I'm not looking at her so she stayed in my car while I went into the house and asked Robin if I could have a cockatiel and she said yes so We headed to back to petco cause I had called and was able to have them hold the pied cockatiel for an hour so then the store people finally came to the birds and I was like I want the pied cockatiel and they didn't know what I was talking about so I told them it was the one on top and they asked me well do you want the other one as well and I told them knowing they couldnt do it not unless it was free and they were like well we really want to get rid of them because we are discontinueing all birds but parakeets so we will see what we can do so I told my mom the perfect names are halloween and hallows eve and she was like don't get your hopes up if its not free or only $10 your not getting it so 30 minutes later they come back and were like well we've tried everything but we cant lower it anymore so how about 2 for $40 and before I could say ANYTHING my mom was like ok that works so we ended up getting a pied and a luntino cockatiel and because today is halloween I named them Halloween and Hallows eve and after my camera charges I will try to upload pics of them. There cage is kinda bare but it will only be like that for a few days maybe a week at most.

Well It has been over 24 hours since the purchase of my birds yet the only sound I have heard them make is Hallows eve's hissing when i reach my hand in to stroke Hallween. I called and am trying to schedule a vet appointment for the both of them. Just to do a basic full exam and to have them DNA sexed. They are both more alert than yesterday which is good Halloween has been letting me pet him/her. I've also been able to get Halloween to step up on my finger twice. Today though he/she was a little nippy not that it actually bit more of test bites to be sure the perch was stable and it did not use much if any pressure at all so I of course kept my hand motionless to keep from tempting him/her to bite harder. Today since my grandma paid me back most of what she owed me I went and got them a cuttle bone and a mineral treat not sure if they really NEED the mineral treat but I feel better knowing I gave them minerals they might not be getting. Also even though I have a full bag of seeds I bought a bag of pellets to switch them over to and I bought what I thought was a bag of Jungle Talk build your own toys type thing turns out there just wooden shapes and colors for birds to chew on but I didnt realize that until I got home so I put one square of each color on the floor of their cage and used somebodys coffee filter toy idea here I can't remember who posted it but I used it I will see how they respond to it in a few days maybe even weeks while they get settled in. Speaking of which I'm sure I am going to be screwing up there settleing in process as I will be moving their cage and them to my dads house since the bedroom I use at my moms place is extremely cold at night and we are not allowed to use space heaters So during the winter I'll keep it at my dads place where it is a lot warmer and quieter. I will be moving them on wednesday because of my crazy off the wall schedule this week they cant be moved til wednesday but next wednesday I will be attempting to let them out of their cage until then I will be putting my hand in the cage to pet them and teach them to step up. I also plan to build them a bird safe dig box thing where I will be taking a shoe box filling it up with shredded paper, some bird toys,a few other bird safe items and maybe a treat or two. I will also be picking up a copy of cockatiels for dummies. So that is pretty much the first two days of Halloween and Hallows eve being home.

You sound like you are very knowledgeable for a new bird owner. Have you owned a bird before? Anyways, congrats on your new companions! Don't worry about them not making any sound, they will start whistling in a few a days once they are settled in. I am trying to tame two cockatiels as well, which I have never done before. Let me know how your taming process goes, maybe we can learn from each other. That is great that you got Halloween to step up on your finger! If they freak out too much when you put your hand in their cage I heard it's best to not try and pet them/pick them up for about a week. But make sure you spend time next to their cage and talk to them. Will they take food out of your hand? If not, try offering it through the cage bars but don't be discouraged if they don't take it at first. How old are they? What are the dimensions of their cage? Just curious.

So my mom decided not to listen to me when I told her not to put her hands in the birds cage and thinking she knew it all she did and got bit so hard it drew blood. I think it's because her ex used to have what we believe was a green cheek conure we don't really remember what kind it was but it was a medium sized bird and was mean as all heck. I moved the birds today and their cage is a little closer to my bed than I'd like but I will deal with it I am not looking forward when its time to go to sleep and Abby (my two year old golden retriever) is going to check out her new "friends" I used to have a cockatiel that died five years ago and I'm not sure if it died due to poor diet (they were fed entirely all seeds) or because Bianica (my five year old golden retriever) accidently hit its cage when it was sleeping because she was super excited for our walk that day for some reason and scared it to death. It is seeming as if our "honeymoon" stage is over they are very active now and will not let me pet them so I do not try. I have not given them any treats other than a millet. I did try to give them some a quarter of an apple but they refused to go near it I think next time I will cut it up into smaller peices because after 30 minutes I threw out the apple, because I was fixing to move them from my moms house to my dads so I had my friend Tayler help me get them into my carrier, and I set them on the table then while I was loading there cage up and when I got back I noticed she had given them some bread which Halloween loved and she gave them tiny bits to fit into my carriers spacing. So tomorrow I will try to give them hand feed them some toast throw the cage bars. I have started mixing pellets in with there seeds because weather they like it or not they will be switched to pellets. I do not remember the diametions of my bird cage, however I do know that I will be buying a bigger one from bird.com with the diametions of 32x20x59 including the stand. Im not sure how old they are I was told that all they could tell me is they are ver young
