Newbie Budgie Owner in need of advice !!!

Hey there ... we have a little blue budge called Moby, whom we acquired as his previous owner was going into hospital ... he is super cute but was completely in love with a plastic budgie which was clipped inside his cage ... he nestled with it and always sat next to it.

Rightly or wrongly we thought that he would like the company of a real friend ... enter Echo !! Echo was a pet shop little guy and seems very nervous. The first few days of him being in the cage (which incidentally is a huge flight cage) with Moby he stuck to himself but was eating and drinking. However he really does not want to have Moby's company ... Moby dances around singing to Echo, he approaches him and Echo sits at the end of the perch and tries to peck Moby. Moby backs off and then tries again ... they are now using the same perch, Echo on one end and Moby flying around, but Echo is sticking to his perch and not interacting at all.

I desperately want them to get on and I appreciate that a week is really not long at all in the grand scheme of things but is there anything I could be doing to help the situation ... they are both such beautiful and lovely birds.

Despite what you may wish, not all parrots automatically get along with other birds, even within their own species. You might have to separate these two. Keep a close eye out for nips that can escalate to missing toes.

To say the same thing wrench13 said with different words, understand your birds are an equal to you! I am going to grab you, take away something you adore, and replace it with my choice! Too bad so sad! Oh boohoo!

I am going to keep a close eye on them and make a judgment call about separating them ... and FLboy, thanks for your rudeness ... for your information I have not taken anything away if you are referring to the plastic budgie ... I was simply asking for advice which you are clearly not prepared to give ... I am a beginner and have obviously made a mistake which I am sure you have never done. So much for a friendly supportive forum!

Was not trying to be rude to you, for that, I apologize! I was trying to get the point across that birds are so much more complex than most give them credit for!
Mix that with two glasses of wine and no food for eight hours!

Flboy wasn't being rude, we just make a lot of jokes here, and once the same question has been answered a hundred times, many places would stop responding and say "use the search button". Don't be offended, sometimes we forget that everyone isn't in on the day to day conversations. He was making a good point that parrots are intelligent and we feel they deserve the same consideration due a human. They get their feelings hurt, they get mad, they get happy, they know when they are cheated...it sounded from your original post that you didn't like the toy bird and got a live one instead. Birds sometimes get upset when we take something away from their cage, or put something new in the cage, or get too close to the cage, or get too far away from the cage...you get the idea. Having multiple birds is always risky ... they might adore one another and ignore you, they might hate one another and try to kill each other, they might tolerate one another most of the time then fight when you aren't looking, they may hate one another and hate you too...hang in there. There are many threads here about multiple bird households and maybe you can find some good tips. Good luck, and thanks for posting. Hope to see updates!
