Einstein, a nippy, sassy lil cockatiel
I recently (about 2 months ago) bought a beautiful yellow/green budgie named Sunny. The bird's gender is tbd but for now let's say Sunny is a girl. So, at first when we bought Sunny, my first bird, Coby, responded wonderfully, flirting with Sunny and even preening and feeding her. But lately, in the past few months, Coby's been acting strangely, chasing Sunny around and bullying her. He decides what perches she sits on and if she doesn't follow his rules, then she gets chased around the cage. This is giving Sunny some severe anxiety, which makes my heart hurt, since Sunny is such a sweet little bird! Coby, originally the sweetest bird ever, is now really territorial and bites me hard when I try and take him out to play with him! Please, what's going on! How can I help?

Also: I have one other bird cage that is meant for cockatiels. This used to be Coby's cage. I love Sunny and have no interest in returning her to the store, and whenever I take Sunny out to spend time with her alone, she calls anxiously for Coby. She used to be in a big cage of around 30 budgies, however I fear if I return her, her beauty will attract someone who will buy her on impulse. I don't think she would be happy alone in a cage, but she is getting bullied by her current cagemate. The only solution would be to get her another less territorial budgie friend, which I don't think my parents would allow. Can you see my dilemma?

Think you will have to separate then for peace to reign once more. Separate but close by.

You can try joint out of cage times, supervised of course but the thing is she cannot get away when he picks on her and they are both in the same cage.

Spend some time in gaining Sunny's trust and I am sure she will be fine. You have changed the dynamic so work with both the birds equally and hope things improve.

Hmmm...the only other birdcage I own is meant for cockatiels and when it belonged to Coby he was able to squeeze through the bars. Sunny is only slightly bigger than him...

The thing is you cannot regulate if Sunny is able to get enough to eat etc. Somehow get a new cage and have them separate. Injuries and vet treatment will probably cost more than a new cage?

http://www.parrotforums.com/budgies-parakeets/ have a look through here especially if you see any threads by Birdigirl (miss you!) she is an inspiration in owning more than one of these little darlings and just may give you some too?

You need to buy a second budgie cage and separate them for her safety.

Try Craigslist for inexpensive cages that you can clean very, very well once you get them. Make an offer less than offered and a budgie size cage can probably be gotten very cheap. Separating them is necessary for Sunny's well being. :)

I know it can be frustrating, but there is never a guarantee that two birds will be able to safely live together and it's our responsibility to keep them safe.
