My heart is broken

When I got up this morning my beautiful little girl Louise was lying dead on the floor of her cage. She didn't appear ill and was eating but I think it's possible that she was egg bound. I tried everything the vet said to keep them from mating and for several months I didn't see any eggs in the cage so I thought it was alright. I pray to God that it wasn't that because that would have been so very painful. Frankie is in his cage chattering and singing away but I'm wondering if it's his was of grieving. I will forever miss that sweet beautiful little girl. Love you forever Louise.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I hope her passing was peaceful and painless, and that Frankie is able to continue coping with her loss in the same healthy way that he has been so far.

Has Louise been in contact with any other birds? Or has she been in contact with anything that might, in turn, have been in contact with other birds? I ask only because you still have another bird and if there's any chance she died of something communicable you'll want to take measures to sterilize her cage and all of her toys. I'm sorry to have to bring that up, but it is potentially important.

So sorry for the loss. As mentioned above, you may want to sterilize her cage and surrounding areas in case it was something contagious, a virus or bacteria. You could also get a Necropsy (a birdie autopsy) to determine her cause of passing.

Very sorry to hear about her. Yes Anansi is right, potential illness is something to think of, it's always best to be safe rather than sorry. You may never know what happened or you may find out later like I did what happened. Hope Frankie continues to cope as he is now, he could even be trying to make you happy with his singing

Really try not to beat yourself up over this, I know it's easy to say but trust me there's nothing constructive over sitting blaming yourself. I've never even seen a parrot lay an egg but I'm sure you would have noticed if she was egg-bound

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for the loss of Louise. I hope she passed in peace, knowing she was deeply loved.

Always a good idea to take precautions with Frankie to rule out some likely causes. I hope his singing will give you comfort and love.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. They have never been in contact with any other birds in the 2 years that I've had them. Frankie seems as healthy as ever on his favorite perch chattering and singing away. Louise has never been a really healthy girl. She's had bouts of feathers being all puffed up and when I took her to the vet he said she was ok. He's and excellent vet who treats birds so I trust him. I'll miss her little sweet face forever.

Did this vet do any blood work on Louise, or just give her a physical exam? Is this a certified avian vet? Only reason I ask is because something seems like it was missed by this vet, and maybe she would've lived a longer life had better care given to her. Don't mean to make it sound like she wasn't cared for, but an illness may have been caught earlier had she had the right tests.

He did not do blood work because I'd taken her in because she was laying eggs every week or so. He did a physical and said she appeared fine. I kept them separate for a week then moved the cage to a different room and changed around all the feed dishes and made sure she had no place in the cage where she might nest or have any shredding materials with which to make a nest.. I also gave them a solid 12 hours of darkness every day. She didn't lay any more eggs after that but I wonder if she became egg bound. I keep beating myself up for not doing more.

I am so very stressed out. I can't stop seeing her lying in her cage and now we are possibly in the path of Hurricane Irma. So very stressed.

Oh sorry for your loss. Sometimes, birds will die for no apparent reason and unless an autopsy is performed you will never know for sure. My little Maxie, a green wing parrot, who was never sick or showed any sign that things were amiss, passed in the night. This happened several years before I joined this forum, so I had no support group, no well wishers for Max, nothing but a huge empty hole in my heart. Never the less, I can appreciate where you are at. You have all of our sympathy.

Thank you everyone. Louise was 3 years old and a rescue. At least I know that she was happy for her last 2 years.
