Hello there! I bought a budgie from a person on craigslist September 29th and I am concerned that he may be sick. I think he's having labored breathing along with slight tail bobbing. Since I just got him and I have never owned a bird before, I'm not sure if he is breathing heavily because he is stressed or sick. Has anybody had a budgie that breathed heavily after they first got them because they were stressed? I also don't see him eating or drinking much. When I play parakeet sounds he seems to perk up and will chirp at them. I admit that right now his cage isn't in great shape. His last owners had him in a small cage with zero toys. I ordered a new cage and toys for him online but they still haven't arrived yet. Any suggestions on if his heavy breathing is from the stress of being in a new place or if I should take him to a vet? Thanks in advance!!!

It’s always a good idea to take a new bird to a certified avian vet so that you can make sure they’re healthy and begin to develop a relationship with them. In this case, your new little guy may very well be quite ill, and you are going to want to get him to the vet ASAP. Birds disguise illness until they are very sick. Please note it’s important you take him to a certified avian vet, and not just a “vet who sees birds.”

Welcome to the forums, and I hope your little guy is okay.

Budgies with labored breathing and slight tail bobbing means its ill but it also could be from something in your home. Make sure to bird proof the room the bird is in, no candles or perfume scents or air fresheners. Make sure the bird is away from the kitchen and cooking smells especially if you cook with non stick cookware.

If your birds is puffed up and sleeping more then you need to see a vet asap. Don't delay. Good luck!
