I was wondering if I could keep a male and female budgie in the same cage without breeding. I've been looking for a cage mate for my little Caso and I completely fell in love with a little male in my facebook group that's up for sale. He looks to be a rainbow with a bright blue belly, yellow head and clear wing( not sure if that is what the mutation is called).

A few years ago my family had 2 females and a male in the same cage and we never had any unwanted breeding so I was wondering if it was possible to do the same again in my cage.

Also a quick question about the color of the bird, would he keep his colors or will the yellow bleed down into all the blue and he turn only yellow(not worried about that really I will love him just the same either way).

Thank you in advance!!!:yellow2:

It should be okay. I have a male and female sharing and have had mixed genders share my aviary without many issues. As long as there is no nesting box or any other nook or cranny to lay in, it is unlikely your birds will mate, and even if they do, if there is nowhere to lay, the hen probably won't lay.

In terms of colour mutation, it can develop and change over time. I wouldn't place too much emphasis on it.

I have a male and female parakeet (Pearl, the male, is still referred to as “she” sometimes because that’s what I’m used to) and they live in separate cages. They show no interest in each other at all, and although they aren’t showing aggressive behavior, I won’t be combining them. You never know whether two birds will get along, especially if Caso has been alone all his life. I’ve had Bluebell for four years and she’s been alone all that time, so she isn’t used to another bird sharing her living space. Make sure to have a separate cage on hand if sharing a cage doesn’t work out, but it seems like you really want this bird for yourself so that won’t be a problem. If you wanted two budgies in the same cage, you should’ve gotten two young ones together at the same time.

Thank you both for your replies. No like I said before the color isn't an issue though it did catch my eye at first. The videos posted on him showing how playful he was with the breeder is what I loved!!!

Also I've had Caso since she was 2 months old and she is 5 months now so I think she is still fairly young. The little male is 3 months. I do have a spare cage that I will be using for quarantine for 2 weeks (though I doubt the bird is sick since it is from a very reputable breeder in my area) and then when the 2 weeks are up I want to slowly introduce them. I will defiantly have cage free times so i will see how the interactions are from there but I will not put them in the same cage together until I know that they get along and even then I wont be leaving them alone in the cage for some time.

I have often introduced young birds to each other. When I first got budgies I gradually introduced 6 youngsters to each other over the course of a few months. They were all under a year, some were raised together, some weren't, but because they were so young they all ended up getting along well. There were 4 males and 2 females and they still live in my aviary with 15 other budgies! Budgies can be very amiable, and you just have to make sure that introductions are in a neutral environment, and just watch them very carefully and if they seem to be becoming friends then it is totally okay to house them together. Just make sure that the cage is really big, and initially you can keep them separately until you can determine if they are well suited to each other.
