Anyone know how to handtrain parakeets?
They're so little and jumpy...not at all like a larger parrot. It's going to take a lot of getting used to this.

I think it's going to take a long time for them to get used to our house. Not only after the disaster last night, but my mom hasn't decided on a place to put them, so they will be constantly moved around for about a week before they can actually call a spot 'home'.

I'm thinking that after they get settled in their place, I'll just sit by the cage and talk to them so they get used to me, then after they're comfortable, I'll open the cage door and put my finger in and see if I can pet them (my sis said they let her pet them in the store, but I don't want to rush things). Then do I take them out of the cage to teach them to step-up? or do I do it in the cage? Since they are such flighty little creatures should I take them into a room where I can close all the doors, kind of like a neutral room? (We have a very open floorplan)

Please help!

Nicole your gonna have some fun with them. Actually hand training parakeets isn't that hard at all, you can pretty much go about it the same as you would with a larger parrot. At least their little beaks do less damage but they still hurt when they bite. The only thing that will make it harder for you is that there wings aren't clipped.

I would start off by talking to them gently and slowly see how close you can get to them. If they will let you touch them then try placing your finger under their chest and press up gently while saying "Step Up" or "Up" which ever command you want to use. Keep up with that and don't forget the treats and praise. I've seen parakeets hand trained in less then 10 minutes, they are really smart and will probably give you less trouble then larger birds.

Good luck with them!!! Don't forget we want pictures!!! :D

Great advise there, the only ones of my little ones that I had trouble with was the Linnies and that was because they are so fast, Slowly they would step up, but only if they could see that they were gonna get a treat. :D Saying that I think they only took about 2/3 days, now they step up whenever I ask them to. I even managed to train them NOT to go on Buccs cage, they are so small they can get through the bars of his cage. That was managed in about a day. Thankfully.
