What do you think of this house?

I like to get Harry a new house in the future. His current house is 18 x14 base and 22 tall.
This is the one I'm looking at.

I know it's only 14" on the depth but that's all I have room for. I'm hoping the 26 wide and 36 tall will make up for that.

Whadda ya think?

I don't see a problem. I have a cage that's 14" wide as well. There are no birds living in it at the moment, but my budgie and lovebird use to live in it.

Others may disagree with it, but there wasn't a problem when I had birds in mine.

I have two budgies in a cage 34 inches long by 22 by 50 I think, I know for sure on the length. So their cage is the same size as my other Parrots, and they use every inch of it. The parakeets are by far the most active members in my flock. I let them out daily to fly around, they put themselves up at night. I have gotten them to start going back in the cage by pointing.

So for me I recommend bigger. When I got mine from a rehomed situation, the smaller cage they just sat there. It wasn't until the larger cage their true personality emerged. They are very active in their large cage. They are very active flyieres and exploring clowns out of the cage.

My budgies live in separate 24x22x52” cages, and they are as different as can be. Pearl is your typical budgie: very active, chatters all day, loves swings, loves bells, beads, and shiny toys, loves to fly, and hops all around the cage. She would not do well in such a small cage. Bluebell on the other hand, spends a lot of time at the bottom of her cage, prefers shredding toys over shiny ones, is not hyper, and many of her perches and swings go unused. She is VERY different from Pearl even though they’re both budgies.

I would go bigger. 14” depth is very small, and height is not that important. Most budgies are very active and need a wider and deeper cage to fly in.

I don't have budgies, but in general, depth and width are more important than height (if you have the option of picking one over the other)

Budgies, being parakeets, like to fly. If you can, do try and get a cage which is longer rather than tall, since height isn't of much use for flight. If its cage is too small, the bird will just sit in it, not exercising or playing. The idea is to try and find a cage wide enough that your bird can actually fly a larger distance from perch to perch. That small amount of exercise will allow him to be much more healthy than if his only option is to sit still or just climb up and down the cage.

It's great fun, setting up a cage for budgies. I always like to keep enough space to allow the birds to fly from perch to perch without too many swings or hanging things to get in their way. Budgies do like to swing and also enjoy having a rope slung across the cage. They'll alight on it and learn to enjoy the 'swing' it gives them. You can use 10mm paulie rope or sisal. I once used cotton rope, but that was a disaster, as the birds quickly picked at it and caught their feet in the fibres. That was far too dangerous, so I took it out.

One of the best toys I've used for small birds is a cheap plastic Slinky toy. You can either string it across the cage about half-way up or you can cut it in sections and hang it like a boing. Either way, the birds enjoy bouncing on it and will crawl along inside it as well.

I know that sometimes there aren't many choices when it comes to finding the right cage, so I hope you can find a good one! If not, then out-of-cage time will be very helpful for your birds.

I agree, the cage you have Henry in right now is far too small for a Budgie, they are no different than any other species of parrot. They have the intelligence of a 2-3 year old child, they need tons of exercise every day, they need a low-fat, healthy, varied diet, they'll get Bumblefoot from sitting in a little cage on the dowel/perfectly-round perch, and they need tons of interaction every single day. Same as a Parrotlet, same as a Sun Conure, same as a Cockatoo...And understanding that, you should see why Henry's cage is far too small right now.

I always go by the rule of "Buy the largest cage you can afford and you have space for"; with Budgies you do need to make sure that the spacing between the bars is close enough that he can't fit through them...Other than that, you want the largest cage you can get him, and "Flight Cages" are always a great option. Amazon.com has a very nice, large Flight-Cage for $99, and a double-version of it for a bit more...The single-version would be great for a Budgie or two.

****Here's something that EVERYONE should realize: Pretty-much EVERY bird cage you see in any pet stores that is labeled as being a "Budgie or Parakeet Cage" is WAY TOO SMALL for a Budgie/Parakeet. I mean they are so small they are at the point of being abusive/neglectful...In fact, at Petco, the 2 cages they sell that are meant to be for "Budgies/Parakeets" are like putting them into a trap or something, and the same goes for their cages supposed to be for "Cockatiels", in fact they're worse because Cockatiels are much larger than Budgies/Parakeets, but those cages labeled for them are not! So the lesson is never buy a bird cage because the box says it's for the species of parrot you have, because 9 times out of 10 it will be way too small...
