Having a hard time taming my budgies.

Greetings everyone! I have 2 budgies. A blue male named Winter and a Female named Melo. I have had them for 8 months now. At first I tried taming them but Winter got sick after 9 days of getting him and Melo from the pet store. So I had to handle Winter and take him to the vet where he was handled and then I had to give him medicine everyday for 10 days and he got better and recovered. Then I tried taming them again and they were getting pretty used to my hand in the cage. A month after Winter healed he got sick again and I had to repeat the whole process of taking him to the vet and handling him to give him his medicine. I think He lost all trust in me. For the last 2 or 3 months I've been trying to tame him and Melo again. My budgies runaway when I put their food in the cage at feeding times. Winter and Melo can eat millet if I place the spray on my finger tips which is good, but they still do not trust me enough to perch on my finger. They always fly away from me in their cage. Today I started to trying to target train Winter first and he got scared and flew away a few times. I want so bad for them to not fear me and I love them very dearly. I would really REALLY appreciate any and all advice on how to improve my relationship with my beloved budgies.

Greetings and welcome to you and your babies!

I’m sure your both your budgies will come to trust you more in time, and I hope poor little Winter is much recovered now from his earlier health setbacks. Perhaps if you work some more with Melo, young Winter may learn from her example. Or conversely, Winter and Melo may bond more with each other ... which may also raise the issue of them breeding ... not sure if you intend for them to breed but it’s something else you may have to consider!

Thank you for the reply! I am trying my best to bond with them. I recently bought a clicker and have started to target train Winter. He knows to bite the chop stick I use to get rewarded with some millet. But he does not always travel from on side of the cage to the other to bite the chop stick, but I am working on it.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
You have come to the right place. I am glad that you are trying and haven't given up. Birds move in slow-motion, especially if they weren't hand-raised. There is hope though, so don't give up!

Have you had birds before? Do you know about the importance of sleep and the dangers of PTFE/PFOA/Teflon (both in an outside of the kitchen)? What was Winters illness, by the way?

I have read a lot of information about parrots, mostly budgies. I know that teflon could make them sick, and in some situations even make humans sick. Winter had some dark staining above his cere and I saw him sneeze once so I took him to an avian vet, and She told me he had a respiratory infection and gave him meds, which I gave him and he recovered, and he got the same thing one month later, took him back to the vet and gave him meds and he's been healthy ever since. I've read that birds sleep a lot, and at night i cover their cage, and during the day I'll leave the lights off for a hours when its dark. Its cold over here, but we have the house heater on plus a lightbulb that gives off heat and no light and that is clapped to the corner of the cage. The cage itself is around 4 feet tall and around 3 feet wide and about 20 inches deep. So they have plenty of space. I take their nutrition seriously and feed them high quality seed mix and pellets, which they recently have started to eat more of. Sometimes I give them shredded carrot, which they absolutely love. I gave them broccoli once and they liked it okay but they prefer carrot. I've tried giving them strawberries, banana, mango, and honeydew melon, but they never really paid attention to them, just carrot.
