Hey guys,

I got my first bird yesterday, the seller told me its a budgie, it was in a cage with birds I could recognise as budgies myself as a noob, but the one I got doesn't really look like one, I chose it cause it was the youngest (2 months old he said)

what do you guys think ?

Nothing happening here as well, can you put them on Imgur?
(its free, easy and works - most of the time anyway ;D)

LOL my non-bird-savvy friend went with me to the birdmarket last saturday and we had a budgie-blast.
First mistake: a few cages with lots of bright yellow budgies (after seeing a zillion canaries already): oh more canaries...
His second: what is wrong with these? Are they babies?
(The first cage with 'normal' wild-sized budgies after rows and rows of those over-the-top-heavy-build english budgies)

Budgies come in a lot of different sizes
(and shapes, f.e. I really dislike the "I am wearing a motorbike-helmet" types with their ridiculously domed foreheads, they somehow always look like they hit a wall at some point and had their beaks squased back into their faces)

Of course they are not really as ridiculous as the canaries that have their feathers growing the wrong way / and look like they had a severly unsuccesfull run-in with a blowdryer ;)

first impression: budgy-lovebird mix.
Not sure those are even possible, but with that squat posing, lack of tail and large upper beak... you could have fooled me.

He/She looks like a sweetheart to me!
(and is probably 100% budgy- what do I know...)

Absolutely 100% Budgie, lol...

It's a white pied color...Although the age they gave you of 2 months isn't accurate at all...Can you take a closeup of his face and forehead area for me, and I'll see if I can tell about how old he/she is (can't tell gender yet either without knowing how old he/she is)...

***I'd like to see a Budgie-Lovebird mix, lol, we'd be rich if we could figure that one out and make it happen!!!

Welcoming you and your beautiful budgie, does birdie have a name yet?. Read up on household toxins, like irons and ironing boards that can be coated with non stick that contains chemicals and hat are toxic to birds and kill within seconds, all ost all nonstick cookware can containe these chemicals too that when heated release fumes that hat kill birds.
I hope you read threads on tips on bonding, and veggies
Budgies really need some veggies in their diets.ikr romaine lettuce just hang it by a clip and let them nibble the leaves. Lots of other good stuff out there. Love your pretty new parakeet. :)

Welcome to the forums, glad you could join us! You have a beautiful little budgie! Here’s a link to our budgie specific forum, lots of photos for you in this section.

Budgies/Parakeets - Parrot Forum - Parrot Owner's Community

And another link you may find helpful in getting to know your new family member.

Please pardon ChristaNL, I don’t know why she’d utter such nonsense. Your bird is not a Lovebird budgie fantasy hybrid, nor is it a ridiculous motorcycle helmet wearing English Budgie (I resent that on behalf of all our English Budgie members and thier families, I think English budgies are adorable, same for the canaries).

Gee Christa, too much coffee or not enough?

Budgie :) Welcome!
I like that pastel coloring.

There is a lot of good information on this forum!

Note: As this is your first bird, please be sure to research the deadly fumes produced by PTFE/PFOA/Teflon, and make sure you eliminate any scented products/cleaners/chemicals/fumes from your home, as birds have very sensitive respiratory systems.

It's good that others have mentioned the Teflon thing, I forgot to do so...And since this is your very first pet parrot/bird, it's extremely important that you stop using items in your home that contain a Teflon coating, or any other non-stick coating that contains the chemical compounds that can off-gas when they hit a certain temperature. These chemical compounds are called "Fluorinated Compounds", and there are dozens of them, the most common ones being PFOA and PTFE. Unfortunately all Teflon non-stick coatings contain them, and the main culprits that kill the most birds are pots, pans, and other cookware and bakeware that have a non-stick Teflon coating. In addition to pots and pans, there are a lot of other small appliances that have these coatings that are almost instantly lethal to pet birds, the main ones being all George Foreman Grills, so if you have one of those you can't use it inside of your house anymore, they are deadly, along with most electric Griddles and a lot of electric Space-Heaters. Also, you cannot ever use the Self-Cleaning mode on your oven, as that is almost always deadly as well...

The best thing to do from now on is to call the manufacturer of any small appliances you plan on buying and asking them whether or not they are "Bird-Safe", and also if they contain any Teflon at all, or other Fluorinated Compounds such as PFOA or PTFE. This is becoming such a big deal that most manufacturers actually know the answers to these questions now.

As far as your pots and pans go, if they are the typical ones that have Teflon non-stick coatings, you just cannot use them any longer. Instead, you must use either Cast-Iron, Stainless-Steel, real Copper, or the most common and cheapest option are the Ceramic non-stick pots and pans, which are actually now very common and very cheap, just as cheap as the Teflon-coated pots and pans. I bought a set of high-end Ceramic pots and pans at both TJ Maxx and at Ross, one was a 12-piece set and the other a 16-piece set, and they both cost me under $50! So any Ceramic non-stick pots/pans set will be safe...

****Just so you're aware, you cannot just shut the door to the room your bird is in and cook with Teflon pots/pans, George Foreman Grill, use a space heater with Teflon, etc. somewhere else in the house. The off-gassed fumes from these compounds travel everywhere, underneath doors and seemingly through walls, as birds that have been 2 floors away and behind a closed door have died instantly while their owners were cooking that far away. And that's just it, the birds usually die within minutes of inhaling one little whiff of the fumes, and there isn't a thing you can do once they inhale the fumes...People have tried to run their birds outside for air, etc., but typically they breath the fumes in once, they pretty much immediately start to have labored and heavy breathing, they become unsteady on their feet and fall over, and then die within a few minutes...So it's that important.

Also, no burning any type of candles, incense, essential oils or any other oils in burners or diffusers, or using any regular cleaners anymore, as the scents/fumes from all of these will also kill your bird. You need to use all-natural and unscented cleaners from now on...Birds are extremely sensitive to all fumes/odors/scents...

And please always ask any questions you might have at any time, please don't ever hesitate to do so...

LOL, not enough sleep -sorry- that makes my sense of humor go a bit wonky,
but if you are honest... that bird first photoos could have been a great photoshop if you used budgy and lovebird photoos.

Not sure how strict you adhere to the breeders-most-wanted features overthere, but I have seen some butt-ugly budgies (not just yesterday). The list of desirable features keeps changing. I have seen championship/ contest/ 'just for sale', budgies change a lot over the past 4+ decades ;) not always for the best.

Oh there is a story dating somewhere around the late 1800's about a cross between a Agapornis canus X normal budgy, but even the author wrote he did not quite believe it.

Those new photoos are gorgeous btw :)

Absolutely beautiful budgie, thanks for sharing the photo shoot. I can’t begin to guess age or gender.

Oh, wow, that first photo didn't look anything like what your Budgie actually looks like, lol...It's a pastel pied Budgie, there are actually several different names for these guys, but "Pastel" is the most widely-used one. Sorry, he looked like he was white with a little yellow in that first photo...Not a white pied, but a Pastel, still a Pied though...

As far as his/her age, I'd say he/she is around 6-8 months old. Still a very young Budgie, as notice his/her eyes are still completely black like buttons with no yellow Iris showing yet, and the black stripes have receded back on the sides of his/her forehead (with the Pastel Budgies they don't typically get the black lines going across the middle of their foreheads, only on the edges of each side, so this makes aging them a bit more difficult than the regular, solid-color pied Budgies, so you have to look at their eyes and the sides of their foreheads)...

So because he/she is still under a year old, there's no way to visibly tell the sex of your Budgie yet...Actually you can see that right now his/her Cere is right in the middle of changing colors, and it won't be completely done and it's final color until he/she is right around a year old and is going through their first big molt or has completed it...I'd actually say that at 6-8 months old, whatever color his/her Cere turns into next is going to be the last color change, so once the Cere gets through this current color-change, then you can sex them...Right now if I had to guess, and it's a tough one right now because it's right in the middle of a change, but I'd say it's a female Budgie...but again, don't take that as being certain at all...

It looks like the Cere is going to end-up either being blue with white-rings around each nostril (the white rings are sort of there already), and that indicates a female, or it's going to change into white/cream color, which is also a female...But it could still turn into a solid blue Cere, or a solid pink Cere, and those are both males, so you just can't tell for certain right now, but I'm guessing female...

If you post an updated-photo of your bird in 3-4 months we'll be able to tell you it's sex for certain...
