these are my girls Macy(blue) and Mimi(green). ive had them both for about a year now. Mimi is the more Timid one of the two with Macy being the more outgoing, both love toys though. i have the rainbow hoops which both love and constantly play with, Mimi likes climbing through the hoops and getting them stuck on the perch beside it so i have constantly get it unstuck unless they manage to do it themselves. there have been a lot of funny moments with that toy.
i did have a chew toy which they destroyed but lasted much longer then expected.

i do need to get more toys but unfortunately the petstores near me dont carry a lot of them or toys that arent made for bigger parrots. the toys that dont fit in their cage i have hanging in my room for them.

DSC00291.jpg
they love their treats, especially these sticks. they argue over them because Macy doesnt like to share her favourite things unless she isnt using them, so i have to get extra and hang two up at a time lol. they were surprisingly easy to get to eat pellets, i weened them onto Zupreems Fruit blend pellets but changed it after awhile onto Zupreem Smart Selects and now onto Bonanza Gourmet Diet. i might add either Lafebers Premium Parakeet diet or TOPs to their diet but TOPs seem too big for them.

i did notice however that Macy isnt the best flyer, she keeps almost flying into me whenever i have them out or will fly into something... she fell into a measuring cup i keep for watering my plants once, after flying into my window (happens on a daily basis).

i try to have them out daily for a few hours when i get home from work, when they are done they will return to their cage on their own so i dont have wait forever or try very hard to get them back into the cage. which i did in the beginning (wasnt fun).

i love it when they chatter to each other, i find it cute and relaxing. luckily they arent always noisy but there are times were they can be really really loud.

once they get their new cage i might add another girl but not sure. for now i am happy with just having these two

Welcome to the community!

Budgies are pretty easy when it comes to toys, they absolutely LOVE the cheaper plastic bird toys, any and all of them, just like the plastic rings you already have...Others include a string of plastic balls, the fake plastic birds that clip around the perch, anything with a bell attached to the end of it, etc. Any of the cheap plastic bird toys...Petco sells them all, but if you aren't anywhere near a Petco or Petsmart you can also order them online from places like Chewy.com very cheaply with free shipping...

***I would advise you to NOT feed them that Bonanza food, it's actually very high in fat and low in nutrition for them...The Zupreem Smart Selects is a great choice of food for them, I'd actually switch back to it because the Bonanza bird food is just way too high in fat content, and doesn't contain nearly the nutrition of the Zupreem Smart Selects.

Also, Budgies should get fresh Veggies and dark, leafy Greens every day in addition to their staple-food mix...No lettuces, but rather fresh Collard Green, Mustard Greens, Turnip Greens, Arugula/Rocket, Swiss Chard, Bok Choy, Broccoli Rab, etc. are all great...And any fresh Veggies except onions, leeks, or chives, as they're toxic...As far as fresh Fruit goes, it should NOT be fed every day like the fresh Veggies and Greens should be, because all Fruit contains a ton of natural sugar, and it's just turned into fat and stored in their livers, just like the fat from the Bonanza seed-mix is. So fresh Fruit should only be a treat that they get 1-2 days a week, and in small portions...If you keep their fat intake low, their protein intake high, and their foods rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. they should be able to live very long lives into their mid-teens. But fatty diets with captive/pet birds who don't fly miles each day are the number one cause of early death in Budgies and parrots in-general...

i was told not to feed them zupreem because it isnt good for them but i do have a bag of the smart selects still that i can use. why are lettuces bad for them? ive seen petstores feed it to them.

i do leave near a petsmart but its about 1-2hrs away so i cant go very often. thanks for all the tips and info!

Much too small! And for that price, you can do so much better! For $299, you can look into a double flight cage! A single for less than half!
yeah its definitely pricy, was hoping it would be big enough since its local and i saw it today when i was there.

i will have to keep looking for a cage then, i was looking at one thats bigger! although i did pick up new toys for them, so i cant complain

Maybe try to find something similar to this?

https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Produ...id=1550978719&sr=1-4&keywords=large+bird+cage

I don’t really know what the options are in Ontario, but I have the XL size for my green cheek and quaker, and I really like it. While the access to the sides could be better I really don’t have any other complaints.
i was looking at that cage as well. its pretty tempting because its really nice and fairly good price. not sure how well it will fit in my room but im sure i can make room

Okay, sorry I'm a little late answering your questions...

First of all, Lettuces aren't "bad" for them, they just provide ZERO nutrition to them, specifically any of the more watery, light colored lettuces like Iceberg Lettuce and any of the Cabbages like Napa Cabbage, etc. These provide nothing but water to your birds, no protein, no vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fat, not anything but water...And just because you see a pet shop doing something doesn't mean that it's correct, it doesn't even mean that it's not bad for the animals and sometimes even lethal. That's unfortunately really common, especially with the big chain pet stores like Petco and Petsmart, they have no idea what they're doing most of the time when it comes to birds, reptiles, amphibians, etc., and if they do it's because an individual store has an employee that is experienced and knows what they're doing, which is hit and miss depending on what store you're at...

The dark, leafy lettuces such as Romaine, Green Leaf, etc. are a bit better nutrition -wise than the watery, light-colored lettuces like the Iceberg and the Cabbages, but there is another factor you have to think about, and that's their Oxalate content...Certain dark, leafy greens contains such a high level of Oxalates that they are actually harmful, because Oxalate that is ingested will bind to any and all free-Calcium that is also ingested at the same time, so even though these Greens like Romaine Lettuce, Spinach, and Kale (the big 3 with the really high Oxalate contents) contain a lot of Calcium, it will never be absorbed by your bird because it will bind to the equally high Oxalate content...And not only does their high Oxalate content eliminate any Calcium from being absorbed by the bird, but this also causes Kidney-Stones to form, the most common type of Kidney Stones being made of Calcium-Oxalate...

So if you're going to feed your birds fresh Veggies and Greens, obviously it's better to feed them fresh Greens that they are going to get some nutrition from rather than just excess water, or even causing them to develop Kidney Stones...So avoiding ALL Lettuces is the safest way to do this, especially when there are so many other extremely healthy fresh Greens out there that are very common and the same price...So avoiding Lettuces, and then also staying away from Spinaches and Kales for the most part is going to prevent any issues with Oxalates...But choosing any of the other dark, leafy Greens like Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Turnip Greens, Dandelion Greens, Arugula/Rocket, Bok Choy, Pak Choy, Swiss Chards, Broccoli Rab, Escarole, Endive, etc. will provide your birds tons of nutrition and not cause any other health issues...

***I have no idea why someone would tell you that Zupreem Smart Selects is "bad for them", because actually the Zupreem Smart Selects is the best seed-mix that Zupreem makes, as it contains no Sunflower Seeds of any kind, no Dried Corn of any kind, no Peanuts, and it contains a really varied mix of lots of different, lower-fat seeds, grains, legumes, veggies, herbs, fruits, and pellets...So it's one of the best "Seed-Mixes" you can feed your bird if you're going to feed them a seed-mix instead of only feeding them pellets...Unfortunately the Bonanza seed-mix is a very junky seed-mix that contains all of the bad stuff that captive/pet birds should eat as a part of their regular, daily staple diet because they aren't getting near the exercise they need to be able to ingest that high a fat/sugar/carb intake...So Bonanza seed-mixes, any of the Kaytee seed-mixes that are junky like the Fiesta kind, any of the "grocery store" or Walmart seed-mixes that you can buy should be stayed away from completely...

Basically you want to feed your pet/captive parrots either a "natural-flavor" pellet or a lower-sugar fruit pellet as their daily "staple" diet, OR a seed-mix that contains absolutely NO Sunflower Seeds of any kind, no Nuts of any kind, especially no Peanuts at all, and NO Dried Corn or Corn of any kind (either Dried Corn Kernels or Dried Cracked-Corn)...These are the main culprits of the high fat content, and the main reason why captive/pet birds develop Fatty Liver Disease and die young. So the Zupreem Smart-Selects, Tropimix, Higgins California Blend, and the Higgins Safflower Gold are all great seed-mix choices...

no its fine, i just happy that you dont mind explaining and willing to give me some info and tips :)

oh ok that makes a bit more sense. i thought lettuce would give them at least some nutrients.

they said Zupreem isnt good quality and not to feed seedmixes as a staple. they also told me to buy no other pellets other then Harrison or well known brands because smaller/lesser known brands are bad, which i think makes not a lot of sense because there are a few good brands that arent as well known. do you know of any pellets that are affordable but healthy?
