I am so sad to say that my budgie, Kirby, has passed away today. After taking him to the vet last month to only be told that he was fine and just molting, I decided to get a second opinion. It turns out he had much more serious complications. The vet and I did everything we could to help him, but in the end, his little body just couldn’t handle it. I uncovered his cage this morning to find him lying there lifeless on the bottom of the cage. It just breaks my heart and I can’t even begin to explain the amount of hurt and pain I’m going thru. I already miss him so much.

I am terribly sorry. It's so much more heartbreaking when you see it with your own eyes. You did the right thing but it was meant to happen.Sending love and support❤.

Budgies are so wonderful, and they’re such tough little critters yet so fragile at the same time. You did the right thing by Kirby, he looks like such a sweetheart and I’m very sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry :( I wish I could help. You did the best you could and your bird knew a loving home.

I know that it is still early, but if/when the time is right, consider sharing what was actually going on medically. If the first vet (incorrectly) told you it was a molt, you know that there are other vets erroneously saying the same sorts of things...Sharing could help other members.

I am so sorry. My husband's name is Kirby, and the Rickeybird frequently calls his name...I have shared videos in the past. If you'd like a copy, just PM me. I don't want to take a chance on making you sad by posting it with no warning.

I will forever think of YOUR Kirby when I hear my Kirby called. Thank you for sharing.
I hope this gives you a smile.

Oh Yasmine, I'm so sorry that you lost Kirby...You did all you could, and you trusted a Vet who obviously had no idea what he was doing as far as Birds/Parrots go...I know this won't help you to feel much better about losing your baby, but at least others reading this thread can learn what you learned the hard way, that whenever your bird/parrot is obviously sick, is displayiing outward signs/symptoms of an illness or of pain or just not feeling well, or if you notice that your bird/parrot is just not acting normally and you sense something is wrong with them, RARELY is it just "Molting" or any of the other excuses that Vets commonly give us when they don't know what to do with a bird; And a lot of Vets who are not Certified Avian Vets or Avian Specialist Vets, but who are rather just "Exotic" Vets, well, to be honest, they typically don't know any more about Avian Medicine than the average bird owner does, sometimes we even know more than they do....And that's exactly the reason why if you know that something is wrong with your bird/parrot, then you absoutely need to find a CAV or an Avian Specialist Vet, OR if you don't have access to one that is within driving-distance to you and you don't have a choice but to take your bird to an Exotics Vet or even just a General Vet, then you MUST DEMAND that they at the very least do basic Diagnostic-Testing instead of just writing-off their signs/symptoms as being nothing more than "Molting", or "Hormones", or any other common excuses that they often give when they don't have a clue what is wrong with them....It's not fair and it certainly isn't right that we as bird/parrot owners have to be the more responsible party when dealing with Vets who don't have a clue what they are doing as far as Avian Medicine goes. I would much prefer that if I took my own bird to a Vet, knowing that something is very wrong with them, that the Vet would just come right out and say to me "Look, I'm not an Avian Vet, I don't have much experience diagnosing or treating birds, and I'm not going to tell you something just to make you feel better, pay your bill, and then leave"...That would be much more responsible of them and would make me totally respect them, as opposed to them making some excuse up, blaming my bird's illness or abnormal behaviors on something like "molting". We all need to be the Advocates for our Fids when they are not acting normally and we absolutely know that something isn't right with them...And the more and more I see situations like this happening to bird-owners, the more I realize that we all MUST first "request" that the Vet run at least basic Diagnostic-Testing, which should ALWAYS INCLUDE full Fecal-testing (both a Gram-Stain/Microscopy, which ALL VETS can do right there on the spot, in their office, just like they do for every single dog and cat that they see, and then also sending a Fecal-Culture out to their outside lab), and then also basic, "baseline" Blood-Work....And if after we "request" that the Vet run the Fecal-testing and Blood-Work they still insist that it's unnecessary and that our bird is not sick, then we MUST DEMAND that they do the testing, also telling them that they are our only option as far as a Vet who will even see a bird, so they HAVE TO RUN THE TESTS...After all, we're paying them, right? These cases are the ones that make me want to go to Veterinary School again...

Again, I'm just so sorry that you lost Kirby, you did everything that you could do to help him, and hopefully Kirby's death will inspire other bird owners to push the issue with their non-Avian Vets...
