That is awesome! Glad to hear that your mom's early interest in 'keets is going to be beneficial to you! As for a good food, well, I really can't help you there (I feed Hamlet Harrison's and Zupreem) as I am not sure of the right food for 'keets. Do some research, I am sure that information is out there on the web.

I do want to suggest something, you need to be very responsible for the care and maintainance of your new 'keet as this will serve two functions. Firstly, you will have a happy and healthy companion for a very long time. Secondly, in a few years, when you go to your mom and say, "I love my 'keet so much that I want to get a bigger bird and really let my interest grow." Your mom will then think about how responsible you have been for your 'keet and she will let you have that bigger bird that you may want in the future.

Look at Tex, always thinking ahead!

Only 2 weeks away!!!

Well the best food brands is harrisons and zupreem. You can use both for parkeets just make sure you get small enough pellets. In harrisons you can get the mash size for keets. In zupreem it should say on the front of the bag what birds it is suitable for. Don't forget your fruits AND vegetables everyday.

Kelli had some great suggestions on a cage and toys. I find that Petcetera have the best cages for your money, much cheaper then Petsmart (at least they are here)

Tex gives great advice on taking really good care of your parakeet. It will help you in the long run when you do decide you would like another bird. Good luck with your parakeet when you get him.

Yeah my little ones have some seed as well as pellets, my vet also advised me to give them seed as well as pellets, so now they have a mixure of 50/50.

I was going to say that 2 weeks isn't that long to wait, but thinking back it seems like a lifetime. But honestly it will soon come. Don't forget to post lots of pics of your keet.

It is a big commitment that you are taking on but we are here to help you as much as we can, so don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm sure that you'll do a great job.

yeah i was knda surprised when my vet said that because everyone in the pet stores are like jsut get pellets and stuff so now she gets a mixture e said the little birds were made to eat seeds more than the larger birds as in that's more their natural diet or something I'm still all for pellets though but I think everything in moderation

ok here it is no pretty pics but you can go to the websight and search for it

There ya go slayor. Those Hagen toys the ones in the three pack are great, my Senegal loves those toys and they're cheap. Also bells, Popsicle loves bells. My birds also seem to really love wooden toys, so anything you could get like that small enough for your little guy would be great. Can't wait to see the pictures. Will you be getting him before March 14 or do you have to wait?

I mix the pellets in with the seed, but thats only because the little ones will not eat the pellets otherwise. I only ever have one type of pellets I don't mix them.

You may find your bird will only eat one type of pellet and leave the other then thats money wasted, that could be spent on toys. :D

Kellli's list is from a website.

I am still playing with Ham's food ... I am trying to find something that I know is good, good for him, and somethig he enjoys ... I just picked up some Kaytee Fiesta mix last night ... I tossed some into his bowl to see how he'd like it and all I saw for the next half hour or so all I could see was tail feathers pointed straight up in the air over his food dish ... I think he liked it.

This morning I mixed his new Fiesta with some of his normal food and he almost emptied his food dish again this morning (not a regular occurance) ... I think I might be on to something ... :13: maybe.

they should have everything on my list at petco I'll admit I went a little over kill LOL so just remember rope perch of some sort, cement, and natural or wood and a preening toy, mirror, and hoops my cousins parakeet loves to weave in and out of them, as well as a bell of some sort generally get about 5 toys and rotate wo or three of them in weekly so he gets used to lots of different things if you keep the same toys in his enviroment he will be scared of anything new in his cage this happened with my cousin's bird so keep things moving also if you won't be able to be with him like right with him several hours a day you might want to think about getting him a friend. blue seers identify the boys and this is all the random advice I can think of :) have fun little buddy and keep us updated

Wonder how long it will take you to get hooked on buying toys for your little fella, My lot now have more toys than they will probably ever play with. :18: I am addicted.

More toys arrived today for them all.

well you can send the excess over here Sidney loves ALL his toys I think if I stuffed them all in there with him he would go crazy all day he jsut goes from toy to toy playing with them LOL. My favorite saying "you can never have too many shoes" is what Sidney thinks about toys!

Iniko only seems to really love ZuPreem. He's okay with Kaytee but most others he will reject until the last minute. With ZuPreem's reputation and since it's his favorite we just stick with that for a regular pellet diet. Of course he gets his fruits and veggies as well along with a bedtime snack.

We all mean a cement perch. I took a couple of pictures of one of cement perchs that I have for Popsicle so you get an idea what we're talking about.

There is a couple of pictures so you got an idea what to look for. I like these ones because the size isn't constant it changes, and that helps exercise the birds foot muscles. I would get the smallest size possible for a parakeet. Hope this helps.
