Older Budgie with Splayed Leg?

George does NOT get around as well as the other birds (I have 4 budgies living in the same cage.) My avian vet told me that his wing had been damaged in a bad clipping job at some point in the past and he would probably never fly again, but he walks weirdly too and I think he might have splayed legs. His walk is sort of a wobble. This really wasn’t noticeable in the smaller cage I had for just him and Grace. I believe George is somewhere between 5 and 7 years old, but I have no way of knowing as he is a rescue bird.

The issue I have is that for the most part, George gets around okay. He can move around his cage, but the cage I have now is tall and he falls down a lot and I am concerned about him because the other three birds do not socialize with him at all.

When I adopted George, he was paired with Grace. I was told they were a mated pair. Grace was pretty mean to George, pecked at him, shoved him away. She also flung him off of perches at least five times a day. Since adding Sunny and Cricket to the flock, Grace does not socialize with George at all and I think there may be some abusive behavior starting toward George from the other three birds.

George has taken to calling for me or my daughter in the evenings before bed time. We think that he’s lonely and is seeking attention, so we’re adjusting the routine to add independent handling time for just George.

I am wondering if it would be best to move George into a cage by himself, where he is side by side with the other birds and can still see them. To be frank, I would have already done this, but I’m concerned because I was told he and Grace were a mated pair and he might get sad if he is separated from her physically, but... his mobility is a concern and I have a much shorter flight cage that would be better suited to his movement and have a lot less risk for injury for him than the current set up does.

This is my first experience owning more than a mated pair of birds. Cricket, Sunny and Grace all seem to interact well and have a good relationship, but George is definitely the odd man out here.

Any thoughts on this?

Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
I would put him in a separate cage. You could put it right next to the others.

I second this opinion. (If they were mine that's what I would try)

Poor George! Animals can be so cruel to each other. The other three budgies see George ( as you mentioned, hitting the nail on the head,so to speak) as the "odd man (bird) out" budgies can,and often are, little fluffy a-ho's to each other :52: picking on the injured,or not socially "right" bird.

I think I'd but George in his own house,a little smaller than what he is currently in,to help keep him safe and from falling, but keep him close enough to the other brats so at least he can see and yell at them :54:
And maybe you and your daughter could give him extra-by-himself-lovey time so he won't feel left out?
Has George seen an Avian Vet? maybe he/she can advice on how to help/make Georgie a little more comfortable?
We have another member (bug&flock) who's budgie has a serious splay-leg condition..maybe she can help also.

good luck with George!

We’ve already started giving George separate handling time from the other birds. For the longest time, George would not let me touch him and then we added Sunny and Cricket and suddenly, he decided he was fine with us handling and gets pretty demanding about it. We have him out on the play stand whenever my daughter or I have time to supervise him and I think it’s helping with the loneliness and isolation some.

I have several cages in the house already, I’m sure at least one of them will work for him. I will explore some options and call my avian vet and see if there is anything that can be done for George. She was not terribly confident about that when I took him in last year and actually advised me not to bring him in because he was so stressed last time, but he might be better now that he’s allowing us to handle him more.

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. George is a sweet little budgie and we really like the little guy and want him to have a long, happy life.
