A Legless Young Budgie

White-faced 'tiel (Cookie). Pied Budgie (Pepper).
Today while we moved fully weaned young budgies to a bigger cage (it was getting too crowded in their old cage). We found out that one of the budgies was missing a leg. He was pushed out of the nest by his parents (he isn't weaned) and he is a little smaller than a normal budgie. His wing feathers are all grown in but he's still missing some feathers from under his wings and some other places. I'm not sure if he lost his leg after hatching or if he just hatched like that. I also don't know how old he is.

(some name suggestions will be appreciated)

Oh dear the poor little baby  I know of one member (bug'n'flock) who has a little girl (Leggs) who has severly splayed legs who gets along pretty well and seems to be a happy Budgie. It's amazing on how well they adapt to their disabilities. Now-a-days with modern technologies, maybe you can find someone with the ability to make a 3-D leg for the little one?
Keep us posted on his/her development!
How's "Stumpy" for a name?? ( sounds kinda cruel,no?:rolleyes::eek:)

He's made it this far, he deserves an optimistic name, right?

What about "Rocky"??

How about Champion?

Legs' name has changed to Hima, but Legs is still a nickname. Hima is the name of a sassy baby who crawls everywhere and gets into trouble all the time in a show we watch. :p seemed like a fitting name. Hubbs was a hold out until 1 scene in an episode when the mom sets Hima down saying "Here's 2 baskets of toys, will this keep you busy for 10 minutes so I can start dinner" or something like that. Our Hima is always behaving juuust long enough that we start to get distracted, then she makes a beeline for whatever she isn't supposed to mess with: books, half made bird toys, plastic, floor candy, Alex McGrumperton, you know: whatever's around. 😂 troublemaker.

Yeah, Hima is coming up on a year old and is doing great! She has a cage setup with her mobility in mind, and we still are giving her water out of a bottle cap a couple times a day, but she could probably be trusted with a small dish at this point. When she gets into Alex's cage she was doing fine with his old water dish: a small hook-on dish.

They really do adapt well. Hima is a completely unique individual, and we are completely devoted to her sassy self. A one legged budgie would probably be more mobile than Hima, but then again maybe not. She uses her legs and beak all together, and when she wants to boyyyy she can really haul around with speed. Gets around well enough to be stubborn about wanting to sit on my chest, climbing instantly back wherever I put her lol. She does have a "uniquely Hima" problem of getting poo in odd places. We have found it in her armpits, and the other day she had a "cheekspot" that wasn't. Eew. Still gotta get or make her a budgie diaper. With a 1 legger, I don't think that would be something you would have to deal with, but IDK.

Can you take a video of the little one moving around? I'd be curious to see how the little one gets around.

Do you have any food items he/she can get to easily? I'd probably go with tons of spray millet, and soaked pellets and cooked foods I think. That old I don't think I would try to formula feed, but I don't think I would leave the little one with just hard adult food. Will the siblings feed the little one? Hima's parents also didn't do the best job of feeding her thru to weaning, and her first molt was nothing but stress banded feathers dropping. :(

I'd say Peggy, for peg leg.
A beautiful baby for sure.
I've read of new mom's over grooming and accidentally snippy off toes and feet before with new babies...
I think nature is great at adjusting, and your baby will have a happy life

I do hope I'll be able to get an artificial leg for him/her. Though I've been thinking of buying a platform for him/her so that s/he can rest his/her leg whenever s/he gets tired.

And as Stumpy as a name..hmmm, I'll ask the little guy.

I'll consider those names, but I'm sure I'll also have to ask the guy as well.

Hima sounds like quite the trouble maker. I guess that it'll never get boring with her around. :D

I'll try and get a video of the little guy moving around.
I've tried to formula feed him/her a couple of times but s/he didn't eat but when I gave her solid food s/he ate so I believe s/he's fully weaned now.

I'll see what the little guy thinks of 'Champion'.

Peggy...I'll definitely consider that.:)

I think that s/he just developed without the leg. If s/he lost it later in life s/he'd probably have died or been very close to death.

My friend has a lovebird that missing his leg since he got him, but he functions like normal, so they adjust. Just provide a platform for your bird to rest when he need to. He sure do great as he made it this far. Allow him to fly and flight train him.

I've been searching for a platform online and I'm pretty sure I can find a good one.

I have let him/her a fly a few times but so far s/he only takes very short flights. I'll still let him/her more.

I withdraw my previous suggestions in favor of "Champion," that's a far better name. This birdie is clearly a Little Champ!

It's been a pretty long time since I updated on the little guy so here are some pictures and a video.

His/her tail is a little bit longer now.

And now the video of him/her walking (Don't mind the birds in the background, they don't interact anymore):

I still haven't chosen a name for him/her.

S/he has some friends with him/her right now. Just some other budgies. But these budgies aren't gonna stay with him forever since they aren't mine, I'll try and post a pic/vid soon. :)
