Mirrors

I have now had my Budgie, Oliver, 16 days and he seems much more relaxed and comfortable than when first bought from Petco. He will let me touch him more than before, but still won't leave the cage. I say "pretty bird" often, but not sure if he will ever talk.

However, two of the toys in the cage have mirrors which Oliver loves. Some days he has total fun-filled days running on his perch chirping going from one mirror to the other. I hate to take the mirrors out because I'm afraid he'll feel lost without them, and I want him to be happy. I bought him another toy, no mirrors on it, but has ropes, small straws, etc. and he's fallen in love with that. I really don't think he wants to leave the cage because he's got things in it he loves. There is also a swing which Oliver spends a lot of time on.

Has having, or not had mirrors had an effect on your bird (s)? I think it makes Oliver think there's other birds in the cage and relaxes him. It may mean he won't talk, but at least he's happy.

Easy to say, but takes much longer to create. Why should he leave the cage? Everything he would ever need appears within its safe walls. At some point, one needs to provide reason for opening up to the World around the cage.

Add food and water sources on the side or top of the cage. Add toys to the side or top of the cage.

Continue to work at developing trust. Remember, Birds have not natural reason to trust us. Each day, we must provide them a reason too.

My experience: I had a female budgie and we bought a mirror for her. She also fell in love but she was almost 24/7 there! She used to leave the mirror only for eating and drinking. She also was do quiet and the only sound which she used to make was something like "we we we....". Once time I took the mirror out to check how she would react. She started singing and screaming. I think I did well but I was a child then and my mum said me to give it back so I did[emoji853] Everything was again like I had described ealier[emoji3525] I also was trying to take her from the Cage but she cought hold of the mirror and didn't want to go out[emoji853] After few months she was in love too much and laid two eggs, almost one month later passed away[emoji853]

I'm torn between keeping Oliver happy and healthy, and abiding by my apartment's policy. The apartment says I can have up to two birds, but that the bird(s) must stay in the cage at all times. However, the cage is in my bedroom, and with the door closed I see no harm in letting him out for a short while or even how the apartment would know I did.

But for now Oliver has his mirrors and that seems to be making him happy. I've left the cage door open for several minutes before, but he stayed in the cage.

What size is his Cage? Parrots can't be in the Cage all the time. In my opinion if they don't want to leave it, they don't have to but the cage have to be big enaugh to fly inside

The size of this cage is 18.1 x 13.9 x 36.2. It's large enough for just this one parakeet, however, in the future I may get a little bigger cage. It's by a company called Yaheetech, and while it's ok I'm going to go with a better cage next time.

Very possible that your Apartment complex management group is covering themselves on two fronts:
- Limited damage of woodwork and other supplied items
- Limit liability of bug and mouse treatment by keeping the birds from exposure.

The why is worth following up on.
FYI: The individual that you normally speak with likely does not know.

I'm sure you are right on both of the above counts, and they also require cats to be declawed.
