- Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
Well actually - Jefferson has been talking from the beginning. He's quite an accomplished communicator thru Birdie Body Language. And, he loves chirruping, especially if there are any other sounds happening, such as me speaking on phone or even just television, he chirrups & whistles & clicks the whole time nonstop. But I am not proficient in budgie language, so I dont really comprehend.
One night, about a week ago, I started to think I was hearing actual speech in his chirrups. In fact, I was convinced of it - but it was late, and the next morning I could not remember at all what I thought I had heard - so, I figured I had dreamed or imagined it.
But -- this past Friday morning! He flew around the room in his usual show-off style, and then hovered right in my face. He knew this would get me to say, "JEFFERSON!" (As I always do, approvingly, so he will know I'm sufficiently impressed.)
Then he landed on Sunny's small secondary cage which I had sitting by my chair. Unusual for him, he ignored her inside it and marched right up to the edge, close to my face, and began chirruping at me. Well, this was new, but he often spends hours chirruping into Calliope's face, so I figured it was just a variation, and listened politely.
After a few moments, I realized, the chirps were resolving into something more! In his chirrupy whistly way he was actually saying, "Jefferson" and "Hello Hello" and "Hello Jefferson Hello Birdies!!"
Well, I'm a fairly quiet person. So these are actually the majority of most of my conversations with Jefferson! I mean, I do tell them my plans, like when Ill be leaving & returning etc, but that can vary. I give them Hello's, and say their names, multiple times daily.
So he is talking! My little Jefferson budgie!
I probably need to find some way to expand our vocabulary. But, this is great enough for now!
