Accidentally killed my parakeets?

Two nights ago, I came home to find all three of my parakeets dead. I had just seen them two hours before, in which they'd been acting completely normal. I have a cockatiel in a separate cage next to the parakeets, who's fine. I took one of the parakeets into a place to get a necropsy done, and on the way home I was talking to my mom about how horrible and abrupt the situation was. While talking to her, I found out she had bought new pans from Walmart the night before their death. They were nonstick pans and my little brother had used one of them to make a pizza in the oven, 30 minutes before I found my parakeets dead. I feel like that's what killed them -- my mom feels horrible, but I feel even more terrible for not have telling her about not buying nonstick pans. I'm devastated and heartbroken that something so preventable likely killed my parakeets, I loved them so much. I can't believe I forgot to mention that she couldn't use nonstick pans. I can't believe I had forgotten about the toxicity of nonstick pans; I feel so stupid. The only thing I wonder is how my cockatiel is completely unaffected. He is next to the parakeets. Is it possible that maybe something else killed my parakeets? I won't be getting the necropsy results for awhile and I feel so horrible and guilty. I haven't even been able to go to class (I'm a full time college student), or sleep well. I can't believe this happened, and I feel completely at fault for it.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Thank you for getting a necroscopy-- that is HUGE and so important.

Non-stick= deadly. It sometimes is harder on some birds than others...I am sorry for your loss... Your cockatiel survived, but that does not mean he can handle it again. I am very very sorry...
That is the reality of the situation (live and learn). Again..so sorry..

Really sorry about your loss, your birds were very lucky to have a loving person as yourself. You knew about the non-stick pans but since you're in college probably had your mind on your studies and simply forgot to tell your mother not to get those pans. It was just an unfortunate mistake, we all make them. Glad the Cockatiel is ok.

I am so very sorry for your loss of your sweet birds, my heart goes out to you. I'm so thankful your cockatiel is okay, and I hope that he is able to bring you comfort in this heartbreaking time.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for the loss of your three parakeets. May their beautiful memories bring comfort as you grieve.

I salute your responsibility by seeking a necropsy and quickly sleuthing the probable cause. Perhaps the smaller parakeet lungs were just under the threshold of what is survivable.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. They really do mean a lot to me right now. My mum got rid of the nonstick pans, and we will never forget about using the right pans now. I’ll miss my parakeets so much, it’s been hard losing them. I’m thankful my cockatiel survived. Thank you everyone.

I am so sorry for your tragedy!
Non stick, and depending on the brand pizza is a bad mix! 450 deg is a common temp to bake at! And, if the pizza was placed in the oven before it heated up, the temp of the pan would have been much higher!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Accidents sadly do happen.

I have no doubt none of your family will forget this and it's an important reminder for all of us. Sometimes we all get a bit complacent, even those of us who do the pan buying. It's a horrible tragedy, but it will serve us all well to just check we haven't let things relax a little. I was looking at scented candles in a shop the other day thinking "I'm sure it will be fine if they're upstairs..." I will not be risking it. Thank you for posting x
