I brought home a pair of budgies a month ago. I don't know their ages. They have slowly got used to new home and environment. They initially used to fight but from 7 days before they have started taking interest in each other and I have seen them mate thrice these days. Male is always trying to force the female into breeding. Female one rarely allows.

However, today, someone just came to me and gave me a budgie he had rescued flying injured in the apartments. I haven't found the owner yet. It seems that his cere is injured. His feathers also don't look smooth and I am not sure if he is ill or just injured. Please look at the pictures and let me know if he is ok. He looks gloomy and is very quiet. He ate some food thrice and also drank some water though. Will the injury heal itself? Also, he tends to hide his face in his back for long periods.

When I put him in the cage, initially the existing pair got scared but then the other male seemed very angry and occasionally tried to bite the new guest. Female also seemed bit upset. However, the guest doesn't show any much reaction and is just quiet sitting. The host male also became more aggressive towards female and had the mating forcibly. Was he trying to show his control on the house to the new guest?

I am sorry if I have asked multiple questions. I am new to budgies and am very confused after getting the new injured guest.

They were also not letting the guest eat from their food container. So, I gave another container to the guest. Guest immediately understood that he should eat from the new container. However, the hosts started eating from both the containers. They are not disturbing the guest anymore but nevertheless the male occasionally tries to bite the new one.

I would have never put him in with your other birds. If he is sick he likely will get your others sick too. You should always quarantine a new bird away from the others for a minimum of 30 days. At this point it is likely too late to prevent the spread of any disease.

If you would like to keep him he should see an avian vet ASAP.

Never a good idea to place a 'found' bird in with companion birds!!!

That 'found' bird has been exposed to near everything in the great outdoors and it is common to separation for 60+ days allows any illness in the 'found' bird is seen. Along that line of thinking, this 'found' bird appears to have skin deformities and what appears like an injury at the top of the beak. This 'found' bird needs to be seen by an Avian Professional ASAP.

Please separate them...

Count your self lucky that your male hasn't killed the 'found' bird.

Yes, I think I should quickly go and buy a new cage. They are together for more than 5 hours.

As when getting any new bird they should always have their own cage. The picture is helpful. it is a pretty budgie indeed!

There's no guarantee that this new bird is not sick so your other birds could be in danger of getting sick too. It may be already passed to your other birds so in the future, always shave an extra cage on hand just in case. There's also never any guarantee that any two birds will like each other , so never put new birds in with each other like this again. It just is irresponsible and can cause fatal injuries doing this.

Is there a vet in your area? A certified avian vet will be able to help this new bird get better and we able to address the issue fully.

Where are you located in the world? Perhaps we can recommend a vet for you.

I quickly bought the new cage for the new budgie and now he seems very active and happy in his own house. I think he was scared from other two that's why he was very quiet. He even sits on swings. My other pair never sat on swings. The male on tried once.

Here is the picture:

I think I will find a vet in my area and take the new one there.

Thanks. I just bought a new cage and he seems very happy there. I am in Karachi, Pakistan. I don't know any vets here. I will also try to locate any vets here.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome, thanks for taking an interest in a lost budgie. Unless there are wild populations of budgies in Karachi, it is most likely an escaped companion bird.

Difficult to know whether the injury is illness or accident, only an avian vet can assess with accuracy. If I had to guess, more likely an accident.

I searched avian vets in Karachi, found one a considerable distance in Rawalpindi. You may have to rely on an "exotic" vet or possibly inquire at a local zoo.

yeah---he shouldn't even be in the same room with your birds for at least a month and after he has had blood-work done ect-- you should be washing hands between handling and even being cautious with your clothing..

Is it a good idea to keep them both in open balcony with fresh air? Of course, they are in their separate cages now. The new one seems very happy and active now.

Yes, it is an escaped companion. There are no wild populations of budgies in Karachi. It is good that he was found and rescued by some kind person else Karachi is full of predators like eagles, crows, street dogs and cats. It looks to me an accident as well. He is very active now and doesn't look like he is ill. I have found one vet in Karachi. I may take him there if he seems ill again. In previous cage, I think he was afraid of other budgies that is why he was so quiet.

I took him to an avian vet. He said that injury is due to accident i.e. hitting in something. He also said that this budgie is dehydrated and weak. So, he gave me a medicine to mix in water for all of the budgies. He was a very good person and said "I don't charge fee for rescued birds". He did not charge me any money, not even for medicine he gave.

I am very happy that there is no disease in the new parakeet. However, doctor asked me to check color of his dropping after 3 days of medicine.

You still should be careful-- it is promising, but there is no way to tell about certain disease s without blood work AND separate tests for certain things (like PDD or PBFD)

You and the vet are very kind! A very good chance this budgie will completely heal and live a happy, healthy life with you.

That is one big hearted Vet. If more vets did that the rescue population would be so much better off. Thanks to you, my friend.
