RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Horrific, and the numbers dwindle due to predation. Hope the volunteers can rescue the remainder.

Boggles the mind why they simply released the birds. No effort to rehome??

Currently I have none, but I have the capacity to adopt a minimum and maximum of two budgies - preferably a bonded pair or two males.
Unfortunately this is a extremely common phenomenon across the world. Even some Bollywood movies portray releasing budgerigars as an act of charity, when it is actually a death sentence.

That's terrible that these beautiful birds were dumped like that. Poor things, I hope the rescuers are able to get ahold of all of them and get them to safety. Being tropical birds this cold weather is no good for them. Why would someone do that to them?

I think I know the answer now if this was a pet store such as some of the better known chain stores, and that is bird mills. Yes, just as there are puppy and cat mills, there are bird mills. The pet chain store probably bought from a mill so they dumped the ones they had. Google bird mills and you'll see these disgusting places.

Okay, maybe I'm a bit slow in picking-up on the advantage of this practice as it would seem that even at a low sale prices there is at least some profit in selling in place of dumping the Budgies?

Makes since what you say, but whoever dumped these didn't think that way. Someone got rid of those birds in a hurry for some reason. Maybe someone was starting a bird mill and they got a tip the law was coming so they dumped them. In the video they said it was the second time birds had been dumped in that park.

These birds were released as part of a celebration ritual to bring good luck and prosperity for the year. The church bought them from a store and they were then released. This is the second time this has happened in the past year. About 50 were captured by volunteers within 24-48 hours of the release. 1 has died. Police are involved. This has apparently been happening here for 3 years.

I see you are from Austin, so are you referring to that going on in Austin? A woman in a video referring to the incident in Houston said about 30 of the 50 birds had been rescued and several of the others had been attacked by birds of prey, being taken one by one. If this incident in Houston were by a church with police aware of it why has no one come forward?

I've searched on the internet and I can find nothing about a church buying parakeets from a pet store to set free. I can't imagine the police being aware of this and/or authorizing it, as they should know these birds are bred and kept in captivity and would not be able to live as wild birds do. Besides, what would a church do with 50 parakeets if they did try to catch them? In Houston it was a concerned citizen who saw the birds and rallied neighbors to help rescue them.

I still believe it was a pet store or hoarder/bird mill owner.
