Two New Budgies! Age & Gender

Hi all,

I am a new owner of two budgies that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with!
I am trying to figure out their ages/genders as I was told by the guy in our local pet store the blue is a female and the green is a male.
Going off the this my boyfriend and I went ahead and na med the pair Lady & Gent. I’ve attached a picture maybe you guys can help determine. I was also told both are babies, Gent(green budgie) I believe so but I’m not to sure about Lady(blue budgie). If you guys could give your two cents that’d be great! I’m also open to any tips/suggestions with training food or anything you can think of.

Sorry I’m LOUSY at picking male from female. It’s easy in wild bush budgies, boys have blue ceres (skin around the nostrils) and girls have brown, but with all the subsequent colour mutations over the years in captive bred birds there are so many variations now! Hopefully someone else with some more experience than me can help you with that.

If they do turn out to be opposite genders you’ll want to look into keeping them in separate cages. Budgies are prolific breeders but don’t necessarily make the greatest parents in the world and the results can often be a bit gruesome.

Other than that, budgies are terrific little characters to share your life with! They’re smart and happy little souls who will fill your home with their cheerful chirping and I’m not a bit surprised you’re in love with yours already

Welcome! Blue one is adult female and we can't say her age. We know only she is over half year old. The green one seems to be a young male who is almost adult (5-6 months old?) but I can be wrong

Thank you all for all your feedback! I will look into housing them in separate cages. I will do more research into this but is there a timeline on when they should be separated? My partner and I initially got two because we didn't want the other to be lonely.

Budgies can start breeding from around six months of age. Depending on how tame they are they of course can have out of cage time but you’ll need to supervise them to make sure they don’t get up to any hanky panky.

A pair of budgies will always be a little trickier to tame than one but it’s not impossible. If you find one is a bit friendlier than the other, work with that one and the other should follow. We got our budgie Val at the age of about six months and he was not tame. However he does love to follow our cockatiel around and has started landing on us particularly if there’s food about. He’d probably have tamed down much more by now if our lorikeet didn’t keep chasing him away!

I’m not an expert, but I have two opposite gender budgies. I got them when they were babies about a year ago. Mine live together in one Huge cage. I’ve made sure there are not any nesting materials or the like, And so far they’ve been fine together. I Do make sure I avoid all avoidable hormonal triggers for them.

I have additional smaller cages, if if they need to be separated. So far, with my buddies, I’m not seeing breeding. (Well I think my boy budgie might be trying, & just hasn’t not figured it out yet.) There are some instructions for if they do lay eggs to take them out and replace them with wooden eggs or such like.

That way your birds can have each other’s company. Mine won’t stand for separate Cages.Even when I separate them for a short time. Whatever caused me to separate them stops right away, they go to the closest spot on the two cages and attempt to get through to each other longingly.
