are oval wooden perches bad?

hey guys so i bought some new wooden perches for all my budgies all type of sizes round and oval however the guy told me oval perches are good against bumblefoot but my budgies feet look very a-comfortable perching on them

they look bigger on the pic but they arent should i remove them?

If they are the main perch they spend time on (or sleep on) then yes--You do not want even pressure on the same parts of their feet, which is why these lead to bumblefoot (even when they enjoy them). The reason for more "natural" or uneven perches is because it puts pressure in different areas and doesn't cause what is basically the bird equivalent of bed-sores (bumblefoot).

The oval puts unnatural pressure in the arch if the birds foot, can make a pressure points and cause problems. But having one or two as long as there are other types of perches in the cage, is fine.

I can't speak for your perches but my OWA had nothing but dowels her entire 39+ year life and never had an issue. All of my out of cage perches are either dowel or rope. I think it's all about variety.

Regarding machined perches and the issues that can result from their use are as follows:

The major problem is both the size (commonly undersized) and the lack of variation over its length! The sad reality is that far too many Parrots are left in undersized cages on undersized dowels for weeks, months, years! The results are the physical failure of their pads. The results is extensive pain as the open wound becomes infected, etc, etc...

I am well aware of the number of individuals that commonly use machine created perches i.e. dowels. And, I am equally aware of the length of time without problem. Point being, when properly sized natural perches are used, the Parrot's pads are faced with different loading as they move around on a nature perch. This provides a healthy, natural exercise of the pads (duplicating natural). Why not provide that small comfort to our Parrots!

FYI: Oval machined dowels, long term have the same effect if they become the standard replacement. The proper way to use an oval dowel is that the Parrot perches on the widest surfaces.

SailBoat is correct; in both respects. AND, a machined oval is still unnatural, for a bird. jh
