So I said I'd make a separate post from my welcome thread and give the whole story of the parakeet I found. So here it is.

I was dropping some cash off to my girlfriend at work and on my way out the door I saw what I thought was a stuffed animal or something that I didn't look twice at, until it moved. Sitting on the sidewalk in the town center was a little yellow parakeet. He was wary of me, but I managed to scoop him up. Put him in a box with some air holes. I called the local PD, animal shelters, and animal control. No one reported him missing. I checked craigslist and posted on Facebook, im waiting on my application to the local Facebook group to be accepted so I can try there. (At the advice of folks here im now also watching parrot 911)

I ran out to Petco and got a small cage, filled the water bowl, and put some food in before I transferred him from the box. As I moved him over, I could feel his heart beating very rapidly, poor guy must have been terrified. Despite that, literally the second I put him in the cage he scurried over to the food and started chowing down. Couple that with the fact that my girlfriend thinks she saw a parakeet outside over a month and a half ago, and I'd say there's a good chance this dude has been out there for a while.*

I really want to reunite him with his proper owner. This is my true goal. But the woman at the shelter told me it's not uncommon for people to dump them (sad :( ). As an animal lover I'm committed to giving him proper care until I can hopefully find his rightful home.

I've done a bit of research, and from my barely educated guess it looks like a young bird. Maybe 4-6 months and too young to determine sex? I'll post a pic and maybe you guys can tell me if that's an accurate guess. I'll post it later after work, can't seem to get it to work from my phone.

Most parrots ( and parakeets are definitely parrots) are very difficult or impossible to determine the sex visually. The males and females are identical. It can be determined by a blood sample or feather sent to a laboratory, but at this point why do it? Even if you wind up keeping him, the only difference it will make is if he lays an egg ( which would prove the sex). We have many parrot owners here who have their birds for decades who arbitrarily assign a sex to them, and find out the bird is the opposite. Give the 'keet a gender neutral name and go on with life? I assure you the bird won't care, as long as his food bowl is full!
