Found Budgie

Hi there!

Earlier today, my mom brought home a budgie that she found. He's an adult and has unclipped wings, so it's crazy that she managed to snag him. We've posted about him on Craigslist and Facebook--honestly, we're not too hopeful about someone claiming him, as he was found beside an apartment complex notorious for dumping pets. He's set up in a little dog carrier with budgie food and water, but there's a good chance that he'll be staying with us for a while. I was wondering if there's a good care guide or Youtube channel I could get some more information from? I used to work at a chain pet store--ick--so I'm wary about a lot of the information out there on big 'brand-y' websites. I try to look at forums for good info, though I didn't see a guide on here.

The budgie looks healthy to me and has been pooping and acting normally, though he was SO hungry. I hope that I can give an update soon that his owners were found. I'm a reptile person, so birds are a totally different experience for me. I just want to make sure that he's as comfortable as possible for as long as he's here.

Well done to your mum for catching him! Goodness only knows how long he was on the loose for, no wonder he was hungry, poor little chap!

You can also alert any local vet clinics, as sometimes people who lose their birds will tell their vet just in case someone hands it in or calls to let them know. There's a great service called Parrot Alert where owners can register a lost bird, or you can register that you've found one, here's the link ...

He might be a local escapee, or if he's been loose for a while he could have come from many miles away. If no-one claims him, you might just have found yourself a new little buddy, budgies are wonderfully charming little characters with big personalities in those tiny bodies. Welcome aboard!

I've posted about him on Parrot Alert, thank you! A few vet clinics and shelters were also notified. Fingers crossed we hear something back!!
And he's lucky to be alive. There are a lot of feral cats, foxes, and hawks where he was found. That's why I'm guessing he wasn't out for TOO long.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome and thanks for helping to rescue and foster a budgie!

So harsh to contemplate a tiny bird being dumped, but some folks are heartless. This thread was intended as guide for owners locating a lost bird, but many features work in reverse: http://www.parrotforums.com/lost-found/49129-bring-them-home-tips-locating-lost-bird.html

If he winds up staying with you for a while, a basic cage will be far more comfortable. I'm not familiar with the care of budgies, but we have many members with great knowledge.
